🌊 A Hidden Gem in Shirahama – Nagisa Bar and Café 🌊
Tonight, my friend and I had the pleasure of dining at Nagisa Bar and Café, tucked away on Ginza Street in Shirahama, Wakayama. From the moment we stepped in, we were welcomed with genuine warmth by the staff and the owner—kind, friendly, and incredibly accommodating.
We ordered two freshly squeezed juices, a wood-fired Margherita pizza with extra cheese and garlic and a creamy white sauce pasta with shrimp, risotto with mushrooms, and butter. Every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The pizza had that perfect crisp from the wood fire, and the pasta was rich, comforting, and satisfying.
One standout was the appetizer: figs paired with Camembert cheese, olive oil, and served with bread. It was absolutely delicious. If you’re vegetarian, just ask them to remove the bacon—it’s still a fantastic option.
They also offered us a local hot sauce blended with yuzu, which was a delightful surprise. It’s a refreshing and flavorful alternative to Tabasco—subtle heat with a citrusy twist.
Our total bill came to around ¥11,000 for two people, which felt very reasonable given the quality and care in every dish. One important note: reservations are essential. The place is intimate and popular, and walk-ins may be turned away.
Overall, Nagisa Bar and Café is a must-visit if you’re in Shirahama. Great food, lovely ambiance, and heartfelt hospitality. We left full, happy, and already planning...
Read moreI was able to get us a reservation at this restaurant that we have been walking by every night since we’ve been here. They have always been booked out and I found their insta and sent a message for a reservation. So happy we did!! This was a great dinner and wonderful experience! The food was delicious, the drinks were perfect and the conversation was fun and interesting. All around a lovely time and we cannot wait to go back for more food & drink & conversation. The drink we had was made with plum liqueur and it is refreshing and perfectly mixed with mango. The sashimi was delicate and fresh. Grilled steak was perfectly cooked and had a light sauce w fresh peppercorn. Those pizzas reminded us of Naples. Just the right amount of sauce and a crispy, chewy crust. We had the marinara and the Margherita. And, of course, we could not skip on dessert; chocolate cake from a local chocolatier. Not too sweet with a slight citrus taste and had little peppercorns on top for a...

When we first came here in 2020, this place was fantastic. The pizza was excellent, the food was made with high-quality ingredients, and during our two-week stay in Shirahama, we went back about four times. We still spend roughly two weeks in Shirahama each time we visit. We kept going back until 2023, which is when the food started to decline. In 2024, we spent two weeks in Shirahama but decided not to visit the place at all. This year, 2025, we decided to give it another shot to see if things had improved — partly because we couldn’t find another restaurant as everything was fully booked, so we said, “OK, let’s just go there.” That visit really sealed it for us. I thought I had already written a positive review in the past, but it turns out I never did, so this, updated for 2025, is actually my first review. Sadly, the place is no longer good at all. The pizza was mediocre at best, and the pasta we ordered was made with the cheapest spaghetti you can probably find in Japan — not even proper spaghetti, more like plain noodles. It reminded me of the same awful pasta I once had at Pizza Hut’s Pasta Brunch. The Bolognese (meat) sauce was watery, insufficient, and bland. It ended up being one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. None of my kids liked it, and we decided we won’t be going back. That means they lost a family of four who could have been repeat customers. On top of that, I didn’t even see the staff who used to be there when the food was great. Unfortunately, this place is now a...
