Very quiet serene temple. It seems you can enter. At first I thought I couldn't enter but after reading other reviews I searched around and found a side entrance that was open and peeked in and saw another Japanese visitor so I went inside. When I was coming back there were 5 other visitors so I think it's okay to come inside the premises.

Koenji is a temple in Suginami ward. The name is used for the surrounding area and a station. You can see some plum trees on the premises. Today, the yellow cute plum flowers bloomed. Long ago, It seems like there were a lot of plum trees in this area. Being surrounded by beautiful palm trees, past people could have enjoyed them.

「見所が無い」とレビューしている方がいますが…？ 見所は…この寺の、そこはかとない上品さや、凛とした空気感ですよ。心の目を開けば、そこかしこに見所は有ります。良さが分かりますね。 とりわけ、秋の紅葉の時期に訪れるのが良いでしょうかね。 交番の所から続くエントランスは、小さい仏閣ながら、なかなかの雰囲気を醸し出しています。 又、寺には樹齢400年~500年ぐらいのイチョウの大樹が有りました。 因みに龍が彫られた鳥居は一番奥、本堂に向かって左手側です。 創建は1555年の戦国時代。 後の江戸時代の、この寺エピソードも良い。 江戸時代のエピソードとして、ここのお寺の和尚が将軍（徳川家光）と知りながら普段通り市井の人と等しく、えこ贔屓する事無く、さり気なく将軍をもてなした事から徳川家光に寵愛されました。 その後も、徳川家光は鷹狩りの際は必ず高円寺に寄ったとされます。 まるでドラマのストーリーですね。 普通なら将軍という事で、固くなりかしこまったもてなしになりがちですが、この和尚は、まるで流れる水の如く、自然な所作振る舞いで、質素に素朴にもてなしたらしいです。なかなか出来ない事です。 へたをしたら切り捨てられても、おかしくはないですからね。 （将軍に無礼は許されない時代です。普通はへりくだって、顔さえ見てはいけない時代です。いくら和尚とはいえ…利休などの前例も有りますからね） そんな特別扱いしない所作に、この和尚の人間の大きさ（覚悟や達観）を感じ取ったのかもしれないですね将軍は。面白いエピソードです。 そういう話しを知って訪れたら、色々な物が見えて来ますよ。 自分にとっては非常に良い寺です。 素晴らしい。
