Features:
Size: Kabutozuka Kofun is a circular burial mound (kofun) with a diameter of approximately 43 meters and a height of around 4 meters. A surrounding moat has also been identified. Some research suggests that it may have originally been a scallop-shaped kofun (Hotategai-shaped). Artifacts: Fragments of Haji pottery and cylindrical haniwa (terracotta figures) have been excavated from the site, dating the kofun to the early 6th century AD. Preservation: Among the Komae Kofun Cluster, Kabutozuka Kofun is one of the best-preserved mounds. It has been designated as a Tokyo Metropolitan Historic Site to ensure its protection. How to get there:
Address: 3-23 Nakaizumi, Komae City, Tokyo By train: From Komae Station (Odakyu Line): It’s about a 15-minute walk northwest through a residential area to reach the site. By bus: Take a bus from Komae Station North Exit and get off at Komae Daisan Shogakko-mae (Komae Third Elementary School) bus stop. The kofun is about a 5-minute walk from there. By car: Since the kofun is located in a quiet residential area with limited parking, using public transportation is recommended. Review: Kabutozuka Kofun is a tranquil historic site nestled within a residential neighborhood. Its well-preserved condition and the presence of informative signage allow visitors to learn about Japan’s ancient kofun period. While it may not offer extensive facilities or nearby attractions, it provides a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history.
For history enthusiasts and those interested in ancient burial mounds, Kabutozuka Kofun is a worthwhile destination. Since there are few shops or restaurants nearby, it’s advisable to prepare accordingly before visiting.
