Meiji Jingu has eight torii gates. A torii signifies the boundary between the sacred realm where deities descend and the secular world where we live. Before passing through a torii, it is customary to quietly compose oneself and bow lightly. Passing through a torii symbolizes entering a sacred space, marking the beginning of your visit.
