Climb the steps to success at this rustic shrine near Tokyo Tower Success does not come easy—and be prepared to work for it during your visit to the rustic Atago Jinja Shrine, located near Tokyo Tower and the Toranomon business district. To get to the shrine, you will need to first climb up a steep flight of 86 stairs—dubbed the "stone steps to success."

The shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered the shrine built in 1603 atop Atago Hill to protect the newly-minted capital of Edo (present day Tokyo) from fire and disasters. The ritual today has its roots from a young nameless samurai who dared to ride his horse up the hill and take some branches from the blooming plum trees at the top. He offered the branches to the Shogun, winning much praise and admiration as a skilled rider. The stairs are the focus of a ritual carried out in a festival every other year in which a palanquin is carried up and down the stone steps as a symbol of...

First thing first. You have got to have strong legs to climb to the shrine if you visit this place (there's a cheat way, though). But this is the point that you ascend these steep stairs to where the shrine is assures you to have a successful career. Ever since a master of horse (Magaki Heikuro) climbed up these stairs on his horse and took a twig of plum tree for the Shogun, Ieyasu, in the early 17th century, these stairs have been called "successful steps". A nice pond with many koi and a small cafe to have a cup of tea (you deserve it after you ascended the...

Nice Shrine in Toranomon area. Normally business people go there to pray. At the entrance from the main gate, you will see a lot of steps to reach the top and a sign that names them "Step of Success". So, basically, business people often go there and walk up to the top following all those steps even if with fatigue with the purpose of praying for their success and wish prosperity for their career. Very nice view and shrine!!! There is a small lake and garden too with fishes. Highly recommended to visit if...
