I had a wonderful time at the Suginami Animation Musuem today! It’s on the third floor of the building. You walk in towards the elevator which is on the left and go up! I’ve been so bummed with the weather lately… so much rain… but the staff were wonderful and extremely accommodating and kind. They brightened my day!
The accessibility of the venue inside is also great. They had multi-language audio guide devices (English, Chinese, Korean, etc.) that were so informative and helpful. This audio device is pictured in my first photo below (yellow lanyard with the black pen-like device and green mat). You tap the pen on the mat at the number of the exhibit you were looking at and it would give you all sorts of good information and explanations about what you were seeing! Very cool.
The hands on opportunities were another really important part of the experience too! You could make your own voice over dub as well as your own light box tracing or animation! It was extremely clean inside as well! The presentation of the information as well as the overall atmosphere was great. For a free museum, very impressive.
Suginami ward information pamphlets, museum stamps and event posters were also available. Don’t miss the Namisuke (Suginami mascot) merchandise...

Never seemed to offer much for English speakers, and now it feels downright unfriendly, too. Perhaps somehow connected with the misnamed government office in the basement?

Reopened after it was closed for several weeks for remodeling, but don't see much difference. Original review follows.
I stop by from time to time and usually enjoy it. It's kind of a quirky place and the English is even quirkier. Most of the exhibits are on the upper floors. Trying to pick out a favorite exhibit, but hard pressed. I guess the library is kind of extra disappointing, in that there are no...
Read moreIf you are an anime fan and like to know/learn a little bit about tge behind the scenes of Japanese Animation, this place is well recommended! Especially for kids!! They or adultd will have the chance to do hand draw animation by themselves, computer animation, animation dubbing/voice over/sound effects, learning the history of Japanese animation and behind the scenes, reading manga, watching anime in the library or in a special screening that they have, etc. I'm surprise with the amount of interactive things you can do here. The staff can speak English very well and they have a English Audio Guide which was free! No entrance fee. Therefor this place was worth for those who are intersted or wants to learn more about...
