Kinosaki-cho is known as the greatest town of hot springs ( Japanese Onsen ) in Kansai region of Japan located near the coast of Japan Sea in the northern part of Toyooka City. The whole town is built very atmospheric with willow trees lining up along the river flowing next to the streets. There is a legend in this town that there once was an uncompleted state of Kannon Statue with 11 faces curved in Nara was sent to Kinosaki since the one who was curving the statue ( Saint Keibun ) fell in illness. He was told that the healing ability of hot springs of Kinosaki is the only cure for his illness. While the saint was in a process of healing he enshrined the statue in Onsenji Temple in Kinosaki. During his absence the illness spread among folks in the town and they believed that the statue was cursed, so they tossed the statue into the river in this town. It was a priest of Kinosaki ( Saint Dochi ) who discovered the statue in the river and he felt the spirit of Kannon was angry because it was left uncompleted. Saint Kenbun later on completed the statue and entrusted Saint Dochi to be in charge of the statue before he left to Nara. It was back in early 8th century the healing effect of hot springs in Kinosaki was approved by the emperor of that time and Onsenji Temple was given an official honor to be a guardian temple of Kinosaki.
