Beautiful place! There was no explanation in English, but the staff was very kind to print out a translation and offer us a visit in Japanese with some English. The renovation work they did on the roof is...

現在の荘内銀行に連なる、鶴岡一の豪商であった風間家が明治29年に建てた、極めて印象深い邸宅。特に庭を中央に配した主屋の翼棟にあたる木陰の小座敷が美しく、映画『蝉しぐれ』でも使用されている。隣の「釈迦堂」も風間家の別邸であり、同じく見る価値があるが、（何かのお堂かなんか？）とかぐらいで通り過ぎていたのには返す返すも悔やまれる余り、訪問時には併せて4時間も長居したし、それでも飽きないほどに別格に美しい。鶴岡に来たら必見である。それはまた、現在もきちんと手入れがされていて「生きている」が故でもあり、常駐する多くのスタッフの方がにこやかに迎えてくれるのも自信とこの感動を分かち合いたいという願いの現れに違いない。帰る時はそんなスタッフの方に自然と感謝できる、清々しい瞬間でもある。
