Visiting Taihoan Teahouse in Uji was one of the most memorable parts of my trip to Japan. Nestled in a peaceful corner of Uji, this teahouse offers an authentic and beautifully conducted Japanese tea ceremony that left me feeling both grounded and inspired.
From the moment I stepped into the traditional tatami room, I was immersed in a serene atmosphere. The host was gracious and attentive, guiding us through each step of the ceremony with quiet elegance and clear explanations in both Japanese and English. The attention to detail — from the seasonal sweets (wagashi) to the perfectly whisked matcha — made the entire experience feel incredibly special.
The ceremony was not rushed; instead, it allowed for a true appreciation of the art, culture, and mindfulness behind every movement. It was an intimate and calming experience that offered a deep connection to Japanese tradition.
Whether you're a tea enthusiast or just curious about Japanese culture, Taihoan is an absolute must-visit in Uji. I left with a new appreciation for matcha and a peaceful mind. Highly...
Read moreThe tea ceremony was 1000 yen per person, we got our last minute tickets at the visitors centre around 1350 for a 1400 start. They will take you over from the visitors centre. They give you a sheet with your responses, you'll take off your shoes outside and step inside, we were very sweaty as it was 33 degrees Celsius but they said it was okay, another patron was wearing sandals so they gave her a pair of socks to wear. The lady who hosted us was lovely and spoke to us in english. We were given a redbean desert, to make our mouth sweet, it was shaped like a hydrangea. We were unable to take photos until the ceremony was over, it was a very nice experience, she made one person's matcha in front of us and the rest were done in another room and brought in. It was very much a case of watch or...
Read moreThis is a place for tea ceremony experience. Some sets need prior reservation via email or telephone. But don’t worry about it, I choose to mail them with google translated Japanese, and they replied very kindly and politely. So no need to be stressful. At the day we made Uji, the counter staff welcomed us nicely, and the tea ceremony teacher was very easy-going, patient, and considerate. We had 濃茶 and 薄茶 set, the whole experience went about 40 min, and it was delightful. Though the ceremony might be simplified, I still recommend if you want a brief experience of 茶道. A few reminders include being polite, humble, and silent during the tea ceremony.
Great thanks to tea ceremony teachers and the...
