Quite a climb up for those who have mobility issues but they do provide walking sticks at the base for those who need aid.
Easy walk from the Wakayama Shi train station. About 20 min. The ticket price 410yen included the history museum at the foot of the castle which is a great price.
The castle itself included many artifacts and it was interesting to see how the Lord and samurai lived in the past. Most descriptions are in Japanese but there’s some English / Chinese captions.
The place is stuck in time about 1980s feel but it gives it a nice nostalgic flavor. The view from the top of the castle is also great. You can walk outside and get a 360 view of the city. Imagine how the Lord viewed his domain in the past.
This is number 62 of 100 famous Japanese castles. My goal is to try and see all 100. I think wakayama castle is worth a visit! Also the small cafe outside the castle has nice simple meal and friendly ladies manning the store.
Update Apr 2025: I went there again during Sakura period and there’s some food fairs, fun fair themes around the castle. The flowers were beautiful and many Sakura trees were old and huge. Many people did picnics on the castle grounds under the Sakura trees. There were also ninja porters doing a free volunteer service to carry wheelchair bound guests up the stairs to the castle. Very good effort for their work. There was also a monkey show around the castle grounds park. Quite entertaining but a bit sad...

One of the highlights of the visit was the small zoo located within the castle grounds. It's a charming spot, perfect for families and children to enjoy. The variety of animals, although not extensive, was delightful and added an extra layer of enjoyment to the trip.
Around the castle, there are several yatai, or food stalls, offering a variety of delicious local snacks and meals. These stalls are a great way to sample local flavors and enjoy a casual meal amidst the historic setting. The food was tasty and reasonably priced, making it a perfect complement to the visit.
The castle grounds are beautifully maintained, with lovely gardens and walking paths that are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The combination of historical intrigue, the small zoo, and the delightful food stalls make Wakayama Castle a must-visit destination.
