Family of 4 for a short ski trip close to Tokyo. Here’s why we love this place so much. - across the road to bus terminal (no dragging luggage up hill) - service was friendly, welcoming, warm, always respectful. - private van that takes guests to ski slopes and pick up included in service, runs every 30mins. - traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast served as part of half board selected warning, there was so much yummy food)! - room ryokan style was roomy and so comfortable with shower and toilet in room. - private onsen with 1 free 50min booking per room per day, with water direct from natural spring, sulfur smell is very strong but great experience! I’m not one for public onsen. - we went in Jan and was served amazake as a welcome drink. Worth noting but nothing to deduct from the place. - dated as the ryoken is well established, but clean! - you can hear the noise from the machines clearing the snow fairly easily on the lower floor. Try to get a higher floor if you can.

The best of this hotel is its location which is just opposite to the bus terminal. Their onsen is great too. Shuttle bus is scheduled to run between the hotel and the ropeway in every 30 minutes but most of the time we actually had to call the hotel to pick us up at the ropeway station (maybe because it’s the off peak season when we visited). We stayed there for 4 nights and never got bored with the food. Kudos to the chef who managed to provide different variations everyday. Thanks also to the staffs who showed hospitality in every aspect during our stay. A note worth to mention is the delivery arrangement (paid service) right at the front desk. We sent our clothes and ski equipment to the next hotel upon checkout so we could travel “hands-free” to Yamadera to climb the hill and then to Sendai where we stayed for two nights before heading to Tokyo. Do allow about 15 min for the front desk to fill out some forms for your delivery if you plan to use this service.

Staying at this hotel felt just like being at home. The rooms were super cozy and comfortable, and the views were absolutely gorgeous – I could’ve stared at them all day. The staff were amazing, so friendly and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Communication was really easy too, which made the whole experience even better. Honestly, it was such a warm and relaxing place to stay, and I’d definitely come back!

Love this ryokan, they have a private bath you can rent for 2K yen for 50minutes, you can choose from 4 different private bath. This ryokan is just in front of Zao bus station, very convenient. Food is also fantastic! I enjoyed the shabu shabu dinner. It is quite an old hotel, don't expect the facilities to be up to date. The room has no shower/bath, need to use share bath or rent the private bath.

As a ski enthusiast coming from Taiwan, Onsen Ryokan Tsuruya provides absolutely wonderful services, friendly staffs and wonderful breakfast and dinner. Especially their breakfast, the onsen-style breakfast was really enjoyable! If anyone were to come to Zao to enjoy skiing, I couldn’t recommend somewhere else better than Onsen Ryokan Tsuruya to stay.

The best stay ever! Location was right infront of the bus terminal. Staff were attentive and so so kind, food was amazing and we couldn’t ask for me. Only thing to take note is that the establishment has a long history so do not expect modern type of renovations. Everything was so great and we can’t wait to return again. Couldn’t be more happy.
