I was on the train when I spotted a crazy hotel with a car ramp to the top floor. It turned out to be a bobsleigh run. I just had to go back! Just over an hour from Riga by train, plus a 10-15 minute walk. €30 for a ride in a wheeled 'summer bob'. Expensive but an amazing experience. One ride was enough for me. 50mph and bumpy. They didn't warn me you need grand prix neck muscles but I guess bumping your helmet against the cage makes it all the more memorable. There's a professional driver plus three passenger seats available. It was raining so they provided waterproof overcoats. The whole thing runs like clockwork. A minute of adrenaline, then the driver reverses off the track and a van tows you back up to the start
It's worth taking the lift to the top of the building to the start of the higher runs. Great views. There was a sculpture exhibition on the top floor, where I would've liked an exhibition to learn about the sports.
Poor communication though. Despite claiming they reply to queries promptly, no one replied to my query the evening before, so I turned up on spec. I only waited 10 minutes on a Saturday afternoon so it's probably not...
Read moreAbsolutely enormous fun, you won't stop smiling for a week after going down the bobsled and skeleton runs! You can use an organised tour, but this is one of those activities which is really easy to catch the local train to (about 1 hour from Riga), a short walk, then pay in cash when you arrive. We did book, but most participants did not, you just turn up, and take your turn. Don't go to the tower or viewing platform, instead make your way to the orange roofed building to the right of the tower, you'll see some signs. Check the times in advance, but it seems to start operating around 12:00 in the winter. They have a padded bobsled (4 people), a padded skeleton (head first, which can take 2), and the Olympic bobsled. No experience necessary, they provide helmets and a little instruction from the helpful bobsled staff who speak English. Children can do the padded bobsled with adults too. The Olympic one is really fast and fun, one of those activities you simply won't stop talking about. They bring you back up to the top on a truck so you can easily do several runs (crowds permitting). Highly...
