Complex Cathouse (Kaķu Māja) — Restaurant in Sigulda

After a long day exploring Sigulda, we stopped over for a coffee break and this place is similar to Lido where food and drinks are individually price tagged. We went to their patisserie and ordered Napoleon and Biezpienmaize? (cottage cheesecake). The price is higher as they are artisanal pastries.

The Napoleon was quite tough to eat. The pastry had hardened up and we had to break off each layer to eat it. We preferred the cottage cheesecake for texture but both pastries were a bit too sweet for our liking.

This is a self-service, home-style eating place, something similar to LIDO in Riga, with a very cute cat theme. The food is simple and ok, and while the prices are a bit high for this type of format, I can forgive it for the sake of the cats :) The coffee shop area is really nice and cozy, and the desserts are good.

However, I was surprised that they only accept cash at a coffee-shop and don’t offer any vegan or even lactose-free milk options. We also hoped to see the resident cat, but the staff told us the cat was ‘walking around’ and not currently...

Cosy place with a woman with short blond hair who made all the difference for us: she helped us to translate and select the best food and drinks for us and was always smiling. Prices were quite convenient. We took Mezpils beer a draft standard one and a bottled non alcoholic one: the latter was the best we ever had and we wished we could buy that also in our country!
