This natural spectacle is a truly unforgettable experience that sets the perfect tone for the day ahead. However, it’s important to note that the early morning hours can be quite popular, which means there might be long lines at the entrance. The express ticket is really helpful, especially if you have a limited time frame or if you’re traveling with young children who may become restless while waiting. Additionally, the express ticket often comes with other perks, such as discounts on certain activities or access to exclusive areas, which can enhance your overall experience. Read moreVisiting Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) was one of the highlights of my trip to Penang. The experience starts with the funicular train, which is an attraction by itself. The ride is smooth and takes you quickly up the hill, and the views as you ascend are already beautiful. The ticketing system is organized, though during weekends and public holidays you should expect a long queue. I highly recommend either coming early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the peak crowds.
Once on top, the air feels cooler and fresher compared to the city, and it’s truly refreshing. The panoramic views of George Town, the sea, and even the Penang Bridge are spectacular. There are several observation decks and photo spots, so make sure you give yourself time to explore. Sunset views are particularly magical and worth waiting for.
Apart from the scenery, Penang Hill also offers a variety of attractions: The Habitat is a must-visit, with its canopy walk and nature trails that allow you to experience the rainforest up close. The Curtis Crest tree top walk gives a breathtaking 360-degree view. There are also colonial-style buildings, small temples, and mosques that give a unique cultural touch.
Food options at the top are decent but not extraordinary. There are small cafés and restaurants, but prices are on the higher side compared to downtown Penang. If you are looking for halal food, it’s better to plan ahead or just grab something light up there.
Staff service is generally polite and helpful, and cleanliness is well maintained, though with the large number of visitors, some areas can get crowded and noisy. Another minor downside is the insects (mosquitoes and small ants), so bringing repellent is a good idea.
Overall, Penang Hill is a must-see destination if you are in Penang. It combines history, nature, culture, and breathtaking views. I would recommend spending at least half a day here to really enjoy it...
Read moreIt was a cloudy Thursday when we visited the famous Bukit Bendera. Many tourists including some primary school students from Singapore (recognizable from their uniform) were queuing for the funicular train, kind of reminded me the train at Wellington cable car), but this one is on a steeper slope. It probably just took 6- 8 min ride to reach the peak. The queue took about 15 minutes at the time, though. Up at the hill, the temperature up at the hill was very different from decades ago (went up there before about 20 years back). I could sweat easily if there was no wind or breeze. That's why the best activity was visiting the famous Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR) called The Habitat, where we could have more shades from the sunlight. There were few water coolers for visitors to refill their bottles for hydration. I visited the toilets, quite good maintenance. These facilities located near Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk, a must go for this attraction. But there were some maintenance works on the site that we could not access the bridge at canopy walk. One needs to practice extra caution with wildlife as we encountered a snake by the walk path, looked venomous from it's colorful scale. We had a chance to see a few monkeys on the trees. The entrance fee for the visit is RM60 for adult. I think it worths the price is you're a lover for wildlife and nature. Out from the reserve, there was a nice cafe for visitors to chill, along with some souvenirs displayed for sale. Ticket holders could have their free ride on buggy back to Penang Hill Upper...
