Istana Jahar (Jahar Palace) is built by Sultan Muhamad 11 in 1887 for his grandson Long Kundur. It has luxurious woodcarvings that showcase the excellent craftsmanship of the Kelantanese. Apart from that, photographs, artifacts and traditional handicraft reflect on the Kelantan rich and sophisticated heritage. The palace is now converted to a museum, to share the uniqueness and beauty to the world. There are also a Malay Weapon Gallery which house many unique weapons such as keris and pisau. The museum is open daily from 8.30 a.m to 5.45 p.m except for Fridays.

For more handicraft display, you can also visit the Handicraft Village and Craft Museum which is also located within the culture zone. It has a variety of handicraft, silverwares, songkek and other traditional handicrafts. Demonstration of the making of songkek and batik painting is also available. However, to truly understand the culture and roots of Kelantanese, Museum Islamic (Muzium Islam/Dewan Syurga) is a must visit museum. From there you will be able to see many artifacts and understand how Islam came to Kelantan, and till today, have such strong influence in their daily life

From Kota Bahru airport, get a cab to the cultural zone and it will take about 30-40 minutes depends on the traffic, and it will cost about RM 30-40. Most of the museums are located within the cultural zone, so after arrives the cultural zone, short walk will be the...

My 1st time visiting this palace, though I have passed it a few times. A beautiful palace worth visiting. Tickets are very cheap. Only RM2 for local (adults), RM4 for adults, foreigners. Half price for children.

Unfortunately, the presentation of the displays needs upgrading. Some were peeled & broken. Interesting display but looks unkempt. A bit embarrassed if foreigners visit this place.

They should release the birds in the cage. Please have some empathy 😞. 1 cage was hung under the hot sun. The bird was restless. So, I remove it to a shaded area & the bird stops fluttering.

MPKB, please keep the city clean. They collect RM4/nite hotel taxes from local tourists staying in hotels, but unable to educate the locals/local tourists about...

It used to be a royal palace, then became a ceremonial palace. And that's what the exhibition inside is all about. Entry is RM2 for adults and RM 1 for children. Foreigners pay double price. Nice to see inside the architecture. But unsure whether the different rooms originally existed or are just built up to showcase the different ceremonies. It's rather hot in the museum with only a few fans. Wonder how they can preserve their exhibits under such conditions. The english explanations are in red on yellow background, which is more difficult to read. Moreover they are lowly placed so one has to bend over all the time. There is not much to see in Kota Bharu and so this place is one of the wortwhile visits.

Wonderful place to visit in Kota Bahru if you have the time. It's a small Istana for the Kelantanese Royalty, built in 1887 under local architecture. Originally built for the Baginda Long Kundor, the Regent who succeeded to be the Sultan. Beautiful Malay carvings throughout with cast iron circular staircase and a magnificent anjung. Now housed a museum of Adat (culture) of the Royal family with well made descriptions. 2 ringgit entrance fee. Also houses a separate weapons gallery behind the main building. You can also see a Royal Boat, a gift from King Chulalongkorn to the Kelantan Sultan on his visit.
