As a small independent boutique hotel, Casa Antonieta is charming and oozes with character. Its location is simply excellent.
A few factors that detract from the experience:
The rooms lack many amenities associated with a five star experience, no in room coffee machine, and no mini fridge. Even though the hotel boasts turn down service, in our four night stay not once was there turn down service.
My major gripe is that the onsite cafe allows their clientele access to the hotel courtyard during the day, and the majority of the rooms have internal windows that overlook this common area so privacy and security is very low. The doors do not lock automatically and the only lock is the kind that must be twisted on the door handle. There is no deadbolt or modern lock system.
The food here is really another low point, most everything is vegan and gluten free. The in room bedside chocolate is granular and quite bad. The free cookies (gluten free) are like little rocks. The free drink each day is either beer or a glass of not good wine. In the land of mezcal I thought these options were lackluster and a ruse to get you to order from their quite frankly terrible menu, which includes a cheese plate that is literally 9 small slices of unremarkable cheese and five almonds- no fruit no compote no salsa macha no bread no crackers. It was the saddest cheese plate ive ever seen, and airline cheese plates do better. I was extremely glad our rate did not include breakfast because it was really very bad the one time we chose to try it. Gloopy runny egg white was a feature of the poached eggs i received. The coffee was very good but they only had uht milk which personally i find revolting.
The staff here were lovely and gracious but overall I think this property is priced way too high for the product you receive. The mattresses and pillows could benefit from being replaced by ones with higher quality and comfort.
The location can not be beat, the building is beautiful and the space is photogenic but I can’t say with confidence I could recommend this hotel to a friend, or that I would...
Read moreWe kicked off the first five days of our 16-day 40th wedding anniversary tour of Mexico at Casa Antonieta in Oaxaca. We will always cherish our time in Ciudad Oaxaca, and our experience at Casa Antonieta was a huge part of that. From the cool, pristine, peaceful mornings and evenings on the rooftop patio, to the friendly greetings from Andrea and Romina at the front desk, to the wonderful service from the upstairs bar and breakfast area from the Musa Cafe staff, Casa Antonieta delivered. Thanks for Andrea at the front desk, we were connected to a local guide (Salvador), who was able to take us off the beaten path to the original artisan neighborhood of the city for amazing cacao, coffee, crafts, and textiles. Salvador also took us on a day trip to the Ruta Majical de las Artesenias (The Magical Route of Handicrafts), where we visited four communities of indigenous people who amazed and inspired us. Through Salvador, we personally met "The Oaxacan Freda Khalo" in the mercado in the Ocotian main square. We purchased Oaxacan dresses from Oaxacan women in San Antonino, where we also met Maestro Jose Garcia and Maestra Santa Reyna Teresita, who at this moment are crafting a custom clay piece for our backyard. We did the Oaxacking Food Tour with Leiver, our gastro guide, who took us to the local food establishments and introduced us to the famous, Dona Vale, who was celebrating 40 years of personally serving the most amazing recipes from a food booth in the absolutely unbelievable local mercado en el centro de Oaxaca. ||Casa Anonieta was our oasis and our hub from which we departed and to which we returned after our awe-inspiring days. I celebrate Oaxaca — its people and its history, and I give thanks for our time at Casa Antonieta. It was our first trip to the city and most certainly won't...
Read moreMy recent visit to Casa Antonieta in Oaxaca resulted in an extremely disappointing experience. What was supposed to be a pleasant meal turned into a frustrating and unpleasant situation.
I sat at a table and started working on my computer, to which they agreed without mentioning any time restrictions. This changed abruptly when, without prior notice, a staff member informed me that computer use was not allowed after 4 PM. Although this policy could have been understandable, I was surprised that I wasn't informed about it from the beginning.
The situation became even more frustrating when, after ordering my food, I decided to cancel it due to the impossibility of continuing to work. Despite my clear and reasonable request, the restaurant staff insisted that I had to pay for the meal, arguing that "the food had already come out of the kitchen." This policy of forced payment without considering the customer's circumstances is completely unacceptable and shows a lack of empathy and respect towards diners.
In summary, the customer service was lacking, and the lack of transparency in the restaurant's policies created an uncomfortable and...
