We happened to have met the chef, Daniel, serendipitously the day before at a food tour [Oaxaca Eats] and thought we might as well give his restaurant a go... and thank goodness we did! This was our last meal in Oaxaca and it was, without a doubt, one of the most amazing and thoughtful meals we have had (not just in Oaxaca).
The chef changes his menu on a daily basis and keeps it quite small (3 apps, a dozen or so mains). For appetizers, we had the sopa de guias and a pear and grape salad. Both were made from fresh veggies and fruits (fresher than some of the farm-to-table restaurants imo). Our mains were tlayuda ribeye and a pasta-stuffed pepper in mole with root veggies. The tlayuda was so much better than one we had at 20 de noveimbre (think crispy tortilla stuffed with an amazing array of steaming hot refried bean spread, grated Oaxaca cheese, lettuce [and the list goes on and on] with the ability to further top it with pieces of medium rare steak, fresh avocado, lime and grilled scallions). The pepper was my personal favourite. It was stuffed with what seems like spaghettini pasta in a fresh tomato sauce, drizzled with a mole negro sauce and topped with root veggies. I’m not doing this dish justice at all. Pretty much, I if I only had one pasta to eat the rest of my life, I would happily choose this.
In my opinion, this is an amazing restaurant. The chef is brilliant and puts together flavours that work so well together. I think for a chef to change their menu on a daily basis, they must have an excellent pallet, great technique and a thorough understanding of local ingredients.
Kudos the Chef Daniel. :)
Also, if you are curious about the price, it’s very affordable. It’s high end dining without...
Read moreBefore stumbling upon this hidden gem, my culinary experiences had left me feeling somewhat disenchanted. While not entirely displeased with the food, most eateries seemed to offer a mundane array of menus. However, my perception took a delightful turn upon discovering this haven. I had the pleasure of dining here thrice during my visit, and each time was an exquisite journey. For those considering a midday reprieve, I wholeheartedly endorse the "menu del dia" – an affordable and delectable option that undergoes daily transformations. Among my choices, the Agua Chile and Pesca del dia were standouts, exemplifying the restaurant's commitment to culinary excellence.
Stepping into the establishment, I was greeted by an unassuming ambiance, fostering a sense of authenticity that resonated deeply. The service extended to patrons was nothing short of exceptional, enhancing the overall dining experience. And as for the cuisine, the flavors were nothing short of captivating; a testament to the kitchen's dedication to crafting gastronomic masterpieces. My curiosity led me to sneak a peek into the heart of the culinary process, revealing a kitchen that exuded immaculate precision.
In all honesty, this establishment is a beacon of delight that exceeded all my expectations. It's a place where palates are pampered, where passion for food is evident in every plate served. Whether you're seeking an escape from the ordinary or a culinary adventure that tantalizes the senses, this is the place that guarantees not just satisfaction, but an authentic and passionate culinary journey that will leave you...
Read moreOur number one restaurant recommendation in Oaxaca (and vegan and vegetarian friendly too)! We were in Oaxaca this past week for a wedding and passed by Casa Taviche on our second last night. We went in and the staff were super welcoming and the place had a great vibe, so we decided to have dinner. It turned out to easily be the BEST meal we had in Oaxaca! We had the soup (black bean base with a mix of delicious veggies, fresh herbs, and blossoms) and salad (with a grapefruit compote and fresh herb/blossom mix) to start, followed by the portobello with mole (a mole negro with chocolate, which was the best mole of the trip) and the tamale. I’m vegan and my partner is vegetarian, and they were more than happy to modify as needed to accommodate us. We also each had a cocktail, which was as delicious as everything else (the sweet/salty one). The prices were also extremely reasonable, especially considering the high food quality and the amazing attention to detail (we paid 500 pesos all in with a generous tip, which is about $35 CAD). We loved this place so much that we ended up going back for dinner on our last night in Oaxaca, and were pleasantly surprised to find that they had an almost entirely different menu, so that we had an almost totally new meal (other then the portobello with mole, which I was dying to have again) - needless to say, it was equally delicious. Finally, the vibe of the place is great, the staff are super friendly, and the decor is beautiful. As you can tell, we highly...
