Zócalo de Puebla is a wonderful park and a city centre in Puebla. This oasis of greenery with plenty of benches has a historic fountain known as San Miguel Arcángel, which was placed in the center in 1777. It remained the main source of potable water for much of the colonial period. There are four statues of muses installed at each corner of the park. Jan Hendrix's sculpture, Kiosko, is installed in the plaza, along with other sculptures. Until the end of the 18th century, this main square was the most important market for the town. Bullfights were held here from 1566 to 1722. It has been the main cultural, political and religious center of the city till today. On weekends there is usually some outdoor dance and singing performances. This georgeous place is surrounded by a hundred-block showplace of Colonial and Baroque architecture and extravagantly tiled buildings. This includes the City Hall, the Casa de los Muñecos and the Cathedral which is a masterpiece of Mexican ecclesiastical architecture. Also, one can walk along the paths, find plenty of restaurants, bars, coffe and gift shops, buy interesting antique art and exquisite crafts. Thus enjoy the culture and traditions. This place is safe and patrolled by law officers. The local open-top tour buses depart and return from this location. They illustrate the history of the city both in Spanish and English. Will explain how this place became a convenient stopover for the Spanish colonialists on the route from the port of Veracruz to the Mexican capital. Especially due to its geographic location, favourable climate and the nearby labour pool from Cholula. You will find Colonial, Baroque, Mannerist and neo-Classical, all assembled in this small town. However, we had our lunch here in a famous restaurant and came to the conclusion like many others, fortunately or unfortunately: that street food trumps fine dining in Mexico.

It seems that every Latin American town has a central square that signifies the epicentre of that community... the genesis, the cultural hub, and spiritual home. And this is Puebla's version. It has the big cathedral beside it, many food stalls and vendors of various items surrounding it, the requisite colourful name of it's namesake in big letters in the centre of it, an impressive fountain, many benches to sit and relax, numerous trees and plants to offer shade... and it all seems to work as the local citizenry certainly flock here along with many tourists such as myself. There is a civic pride in this plaza and it shows. There are volunteers who help hapless tourists, families with kids playing in the nearby playground... it feels safe and homey. I liked it here.

A large central plaza that contains a small but a very nice park and is surrounded by colonial buildings on all sides. The park inside the plaza provides lots of shade and there are many benches to sit on. There is a nice fountain in the middle as well as a gazebo typical of Mexican central squares. Architecture surrounding the plaza feels very European. Some restaurants and shops around but also government offices and the usual church.

Place is wonderful. Lots of places to eat and shop and the buildings take you back in time. Place for families or couples or anybody that wants to be social and have a really special time. Parking available and cheap like a buck an hour. Same thing in a big U.S. city would run ten times that. Even at night I felt safe and secure. A must see. Also... The museum there has Leonardo Devinche's works on loan till October. Can't miss that.

Zocolas are the center of activities for every Mexican city and town. Zocalo de Puebla is my favorite. No matter the time of day, people are everywhere. There is amazing energy. The hawkers and street performers aboumd. Many good cafes (if you can ignore the American fast food Invaders), and lots of great shopping in the area. The Puebla Cathedral is adjacent. And it's baroque architecture is worth your perusal.
