We booked the 3.5-hour tour and arrived exactly 15 minutes early, as recommended during the online booking process. We were there as a family (2 adults and 2 children, ages 5 and 6). Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly, but there was very little explanation of how the tour would proceed.
The group was very large, and the guide seemed extremely rushed and impatient. He didn’t take the time to address anyone individually and just kept pushing us to move forward quickly. The helmet I was given didn’t fit at all—when I mentioned it, I was told they were "one-size-fits-all." Only after repeated requests did another staff member finally provide a different one that fit properly. Meanwhile, the guide didn’t wait and just walked off without us. We didn’t know where to go and wandered the area until we eventually found the group already descending into the grotto. My husband asked the guide not to walk ahead without the group, as we weren’t slow—just trying to keep up with small children. With such a large group, it’s important to consider everyone, not just those at the front.
Once inside the grotto, the experience was truly fascinating. The information provided by the guide was quite limited, but seeing the caves and underground passages—and walking or even swimming through them—was absolutely magical.
We continued along the underground river, beautifully lit to reveal the crystal-clear water. Afterward, we had to rush through the rest of the tour, barely having time to take in the other cenotes. The natural surroundings, including the lush flora and fauna, were breathtaking—but the constant rushing really took away from the experience. We spoke with several other participants who felt the same way.
There was also no clear communication about what would happen next or what the schedule was. After the guided portion, we were brought to lunch—which was excellent. The food was delicious, the selection great, the staff very friendly, and the setting absolutely beautiful.
After eating, we waited for what felt like a long time before finally hearing from another guide that we were now free to explore on our own and use the kayaks. Once again, no one had told us this in advance, which was frustrating.
The time we spent on our own was actually the best part—relaxing, taking everything in slowly, and enjoying the kayaking. Unfortunately, in one of the cenotes, both kayaks were damaged and kept filling with water, making them unusable.
Overall, it was a beautiful experience, but the negatives were entirely due to the guide or poor organization (it’s hard to know who was responsible for the time pressure). Considering the price, better communication and a more thoughtful pace should be expected. Without the rush and confusion, this would easily have been a five-star experience. I’d recommend exploring the area without a guide if possible—though keep in mind, the grotto can only be...
Read moreIf you are looking for a place full of loud and obnoxious tourists this is not the place for you. However, if you’re looking for a beautiful piece of Mayan culture presented by wonderful people then this IS DEFINITELY THE PLACE FOR YOU! From the moment we arrived we were greeted with smiles from the friendly staff. There are several options to choose from because they have 5 Cenotes and an underground river. One private cenote and the underground river are guided. We chose to pay for the whole package which included all five cenotes and the underground river. This package also included lunch. It was around $80 per person. To some this may sound expensive but a.) this is less expensive than other packages for one cenote which were like $130 per person and there were more limitations. b.) The underground river tour alone and lunch are worth it let alone 5 additional cenotes. c.) you can literally just show up and they will put you in a group. Literally take a cab and pop up. That’s why the price was low we paid directly to the venue as opposed to paying the additional fees for the steer vendors and resorts charge to “book it” for you. I would just recommend checking the time as I think their last guided tour is midday. Honestly I don’t know for sure because we went early so definitely check the start times.
This is such a beautiful place and it is family friendly. There were a few children with other groups. My only caution is if you want to do the underground river then I would make sure you’re children are old enough to negotiate obstacles because it requires getting through a few places as it’s a natural cave and they try to conserve the natural beauty of it. It was completely worth it. It was so beautiful. The underground river alone was worth the entry fee.
Our guide was Valentine. He was an amazing guide and had extensive knowledge of the cenotes, Mayan culture and the different formations within the caves we went through. He also did a great job of explaining some pretty intricate details about the caves in English for my wife and our friends. I thought I was going to have do a lot of translating when we left our resort. Lol. Valentine if you’re reading this you did great brother.
Overall, this place is a must visit for people who want a great experience with awesome people. The guided portion limits groups sizes to around ten or so which really helps with the experience because you’re not fighting people to enjoy everything Cantun Chi has to offer. My wife and I are committed to visiting again next time we are in Playa. Especially since it is so close to the Mahekal Beach Resort where we will definitely stay...
Read moreEco Kantun Chi Overall we had a great day here!! But I’d recommend a few things to help the day run smoother. Definitely recommend the package which includes the underground river walk as this was absolutely the highlight of the day. The price for the value is totally worth it. We took a collectivo from playa del Carmen. 40 pesos each, pay the driver when you arrive. You have to say where you want to stop. To return, you get a collectivo from the opposite side of the road, felt a bit chaotic on the highway but they are used to it! FYI, you need to show ID when you get your bracelet for the day - we showed pictures of our passport which worked fine. There’s a 200 peso deposit for a locker which you get the full amount back at the end of the day. If you arrive early you can have free time in the park and stay til close. Our guide Rene was great, he was very passionate. Unfortunately we felt a bit rushed at the cenotes. We didn’t get to cenote 3 before the river start time and we didn’t get to swim or stop at cenote 4, we were only shown where it was and told we had free time to come back later. Part of this was not Rene’s fault but because of a couple people in our tour group who didn’t wear shoes and walked very slowly on the gravel. FYI you are not provided water shoes. If you have crocs or water shoes definitely wear them if not flip flops are fine. They provide you with booties to go to the underwater river tour only. The lunch was very good. The cenotes were all beautiful and different, number 3 and 5 were our faves. Number 5 is only accessible with a guide. The park is well maintained, clean, lots of friendly helpful staff, bathrooms well spread out. Rental equipment is in great shape. They gave you a free snorkel which was very thoughtful. They have free mosquito repellent that’s safe for the water. Overall would totally recommend this place to explore different cenotes in one spot that are beautiful and not crowded, but wish they organized the day to run smoother so you weren’t made to back track through the spread out park to go...
