A Fascinating World of Science and Fun at NEMO Amsterdam
Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the NEMO Science Museum is an iconic and must-visit destination for science enthusiasts and curious minds alike. Housed in a striking, boat-shaped building designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, NEMO is the largest science center in the Netherlands and a place where science comes to life in the most interactive and engaging ways.
NEMO is not your typical museum—it’s a hands-on experience filled with interactive exhibits that cover a broad range of scientific topics. From physics and chemistry to biology and technology, the museum caters to visitors of all ages. Whether you’re experimenting with water power, learning about the human body, or discovering how light and sound work, the exhibits are designed to spark curiosity and provide fun, educational experiences.
One of the most popular features of NEMO is the rooftop terrace, which offers panoramic views of the city and a unique perspective on Amsterdam’s skyline. The terrace also has a café, making it a perfect spot to relax after exploring the museum, while enjoying a cup of coffee and the scenic surroundings.
NEMO is especially popular with families and children, as the exhibits are crafted to be both entertaining and educational. However, adults will find plenty to enjoy here as well, from the thought-provoking displays to the hands-on experiments that engage visitors on multiple levels.

Read moreI recently visited Nemo and unfortunately had a very unpleasant experience at the ticket control area. After purchasing my own ticket, I proceeded upstairs to present it to the woman checking tickets. Instead of simply scanning my ticket, she immediately turned her attention to my young niece, who was standing slightly behind me next to my mother (who had her own ticket).
In an unnecessarily aggressive tone, she demanded to know about “the child,” assuming my niece was with me. I explained that I was showing my ticket and that the child was not with me. Despite my clarification, she continued pressing the issue and insisting I needed a ticket for the child. I pointed out that there were many children walking around, and she could not just assume responsibility based on proximity. She continued to act in an aggressive manner until my mother stepped forward and explained that my niece was with her.
Unfortunately, instead of de-escalating, the staff member called her manager. Things escalated unnecessarily, and in the end, my family and I were thrown out of Nemo. The reason given was that she felt “threatened” because I expressed my frustration by showing her the middle finger after the repeated harassment.
This was an extremely disappointing and humiliating experience. Staff should be trained to handle situations with professionalism, courtesy, and fairness, rather than making assumptions and escalating conflicts. What should have been a simple ticket check turned into a situation that ruined our visit. I sincerely hope Nemo reviews how its employees are trained to interact with guests so that future visitors are treated with...
Read moreWe have always heard great things about this museum and its interactive nature, so we finally decided to check it out and I can honestly say it was amazing. There was a great balance of education, exploration and fun and things to do for all ages, however, I must say it's a bit embarrassing when adults are holding up queues of children to play on every exhibition! This is very much a kid-centric place and so it should be!
We enjoyed the lab experiments which highlighted the importance of using sunscreen and the puzzles dotted throughout certainly piqued my child's interest. For such a hands on venue, it was great to see the amount of hand sanitizing stations available to us and they made hand cleaning a feature of the exhibit! Pandemic or not, I'm glad to see children being more hygienic! We booked tickets online on the day and we arrived 20 minutes early, they were not busy and therefore we didn't want to queue. I would dread to go there on a busy day as I can imagine queuing for every exhibit to be rather tedious. We did queue for a couple of exhibits, but it wasn't overly time consuming. My son had a lot of fun and used every second of our 2 hour slot, he probably could have stayed another 2 hours but we were satisfied with the amount of time to explore! There were clear markings on the floor to guide us in, around and out which aided the social distancing measures. The cafe and toilets were open and clean. Overall it was a great day out in a...
