I went to this sanctuary area. It's made up mostly of wetlands, trees, and an observation tower. The tower is the best place to observe the birds, but the authorities should spend a little money on this area to clean it up and make it more attractive for visitors. I saw maybe five types of birds including the little yellow warbler. There are no signs to help you identify what types of birds you are viewing nor is there any information about how the "sanctuary" was built. Tip: It's important the area at the right time of day: dusk and and dawn are the prime hours to be there. I arrived a little after dawn, but still spotted a variety of birds there, both from the tower and from the ground. Herons, ducks, moorhens etc -- and a peregrine falcon. But in tropical midday sun there will be few birds to be seen, so pick your visit...
Read moreYou can find this place by locating a large windmill and then taking an unmarked dirt road into the sanctuary.
The place itself is not large, though the observation tower provides a good view over water bodies and vegetation. It also has roof to cover from the Sun.
We observed Great Egret, Neotropic Cormorants, Common Gallinule, and one Osprey. Nothing that we had not seen elsewhere near the resorts and on the island.
We also noticed that a lot of cars would come and park. No one would get off. They would be just parked there. They would not roll down the windows, either.

Read moreIt was a fun walk, but we honestly barely saw any birds. A bunch of doves (i think?), a single crane, and some smaller yellow birds. While it was a nice change of pace, it really wasnt worth the long walk. Most of the sanctuary is unstructured, without any path around it you have to go around the perimeter looking for them. But this requires you to spend way too much time on the side of the road or downwind of a horrible smelling plant. Add in the high heat and it really just wasn't worth the walk. It might be nice if you are serious about bird watching, but for most people...
