The best value museum in Rotterdam, and the most fascinating collection. Even if you are not into chess, there is something to amuse or delight you here. In the shade of the famous Cube Houses, on the beautifully kept overpass, there is a building that looks like a shop, but is in fact a museum. For a tiny price (about 3 euros, I think) you could easily spend an hour looking through a simply vast collection of chess pieces, boards and related equipment. They have three-player chess, and 4D chess from Star Trek, but the highlight is the odd, obscure or unexpected set that sparks a childhood memory, or takes you back to a place you once visited. There is a challenge for children (my son won a chess piece to take home with him), a chance to vote on the latest additions to the museum, and the opportunity to play a game with the over-sized collection of pieces designed for the museum, out on the promenade. The staff were helpful, informative and kind. This is a great way to spend a little more time amongst the fabulous architecture...

This museum is truly a hidden gem! It might be a bit hard to find, but here you can discover the world's largest collection of chess pieces. As a huge chess enthusiast, I think it's absolutely worth a visit. You get to see some of the most exotic and unique chess sets from all over the world, and once you're done, you can sit outside and enjoy a game of chess on different boards. The staff is super friendly as well and patiently answers any questions you might have. Thank you so much for the great...

Sinti-me quase assaltado!

This is a lovely little place to visit when in Rotterdam. The museum houses the biggest collection of chess pieces on the world. There is something for everyone and even my 5 year old loved it. It's a bit tricky to find and is not accessible from street level. You need to go up into the cube houses. Look out for the large chess board beside the museum as its probably easier than finding the entrance itself. Good value for money too.
