Read moreI do not recommend booking a boat from Boatrental Giethoorn because of unsafe boating practices and not giving refunds when there's a storm.
It was raining heavy on and off the day of our rental and I asked if we could get a refund for unused time if we had to come back if it started storming again. Answer- "No". We indeed got caught in an intense rain and wind storm at the lake section of the boating route (canals are one way and all routes go through a lake). We came back an hour early completely soaked through our rain gear and were refused a refund.
When picking up our boat I also asked how to get ahold of them if the electric boat died because we didn't have a local phone plan. Sarcastic answer we got- "It won't die, you can drive it to England".
As for safety, there was no emergency paddle, no whistle or way to signal for help, no bailer, no rope, and no PFDs/lifejackets. This perhaps would be fine in the busy, narrow canals, but not on a lake. The boats are also ridiculously slow with no way to speed up if you need to quickly get to safety. So, we were out on a lake during a windy rain storm in a metal boat with hardly any speed and no safety gear.
This company is greedy and has no concern for the safety of their customers and I would never recommend them to anyone. There are plenty of places to rent a boat in Giethoorn, and while I'm not sure if other companies take boating safety more seriously, maybe they at least will have better customer service and give refunds because of...
Read moreOverall, very disapointing experience, Unsafe, broken boats. I don't recommend this company for family with kids.
I booked and paid in advance for an 8-person boat at their main location (Zuiderpad 14A). On the rental day, I received an email with updated booking info, but it looked identical to the original, with no clear mention of a location change. When we arrived at the original spot, the staff couldn’t find our booking. After 10 minutes searching, we were told it had been moved to another location across the city, it took us 15min to reach that point by car including parking. At the new location, there was No Staff and No Boat, and we spent nearly 30mins calling and searching before someone admitted on helpline that they had no boat ready for us.
When we asked employees at their own on-site hotel/restaurant, they claimed they had no connection to the boat rental. However, once we finally got the boat started, the same hotel waiter came running and asked how we managed to start the boat, and we had to show him our booking. Completely disorganized.
Unsafe Boat: Our trip started over an hour late. The Boat broke down in the middle of the big lake. It shut off completely it was scary with family and kids, then helpline told us to manually flip a power breaker inside a electrical wiring compartment — a risky and unsafe task, especially with kids on board. The boat continued to shut down every 10 minutes, forcing us to repeat this dangerous step...
