During a recent visit to Zwolle, we had the chance to explore Museum de Fundatie, and I can confidently say it was an unforgettable experience. The first thing that struck us was the building itself—it’s truly a work of art. The combination of the historic neoclassical base with the ultra-modern “cloud” structure on top is fascinating. It’s not just a museum; it’s an architectural masterpiece that demands your attention even before you step inside.
Once inside, the museum didn’t disappoint. The collection is diverse, featuring everything from classic to contemporary art, and every piece seemed to tell a story. We were particularly drawn to some of the modern installations, which felt both thought-provoking and playful. The way the exhibits were curated made it easy to move between different styles and eras while still feeling cohesive.
One of our favorite moments was enjoying the view from the “cloud” section at the top. The large windows offer stunning panoramic views of Zwolle, adding an extra layer of magic to the visit. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend hours just soaking it all in.
Museum de Fundatie is not just about the art—it’s the entire experience. The combination of innovative design, compelling exhibitions, and the serene ambiance makes it a must-visit destination. We left feeling inspired and eager to return one day. If you’re in Zwolle, this is a place you simply...
Read moreLovely museum located in the historical centre of Zwolle. Whilst the building seem to be compact from the outside, the interior is surprisingly spacious, which in turn facilitates the ability to stuff the museum with multiple exhibitions at once. Four floors of the museum, two of which are located in the modernistic egg-like construction placed on the rooftop of the old palace, leave visitors enough time to merge completely into the vivid collection of the museum. There's always something to appreciate for contemporary art lovers as the museum runs 4-5 major exhibitions of recent art every year.
The museum itself is rarely crowded even during weekends which makes it a comfortable and cosy...
Read moreThe building of the Fundatie is beautiful and a true work of architectural art. It combines the old style with surprising and contrasting new elements. The museum didn't have a permanent exhibition when I visited it, but three temporary exhibitions instead. It is nice that they give relatively unknown artists an opportunity to show their work to the public. Personally I don't like the fact that all this needs to be so politically loaded, the themes of the exhibitions are all linked to minorities, injustice and suppressed people. So the question comes to my mind: what defines art? Does it only confront visitors or can we also expect beauty and...
