Kaikoura had a good museum pre-earthquake. As good exhibits and curation as you would find in any museum, anywhere. Now they've got one with REAL heart, and it's worth a trip for the pop-up exhibition on the earthquake and its effects, physical, social, and psychological, on this iconic seaside community. Kaikoura has always been on the edge, and a little bit isolated. The mountains surrounding it on the land side, and the sea bashing up on the front porch, have made sure of that. And that's how the locals like it. They love their place, its wild weather, its wild whaling and fishing history, its small community, its being on the edge of things. This is reflected in the community feel of the museum, and the warmth of the whole place. The exhibits are of very high quality, and give you a real insight into the history of the town and area. The quake exhibit is moving and very personal. Highly recommended.

I really enjoy the background and many interesting things like samples that are shown on shelves which are quite new views of marine material for me :) not just these stuff, I do have a good time to play with puzzles even that is suitable for child 😁 two sides of information I think that's enough for me to get the brief view of history of Kaikoura, it is worth having a great look and watching our natural "friends' " life here ( seal, Moa, blue penguins, special frogs, etc ) really thank u for showing all of these and the price for the entrance fee is reasonable, should have some support 💪🏻

My wife and I visited the museum. It is quaint, charming and the exhibit about the earthquake was eye-opening.

However we were saddened at the lack of cultural diversity represented throughout. There is nary a mention of the Maori history or culture in the area aside from an automated video telling a cultural legend.

With promotional material such as the rack card we picked up (which inspired our visit) featuring only one photo, a Maori woman and the words Oku Haerenga grossly misrepresents diverse culture and history.

It is deeply disturbing to use a Moari woman and language to promote this offering which pays no homage to this aspect of Kaikoura’s heritage.

I trust the organizers reconsider the use of such material to promote what is mostly a charming natural, social and economic history of this region. It is certainly not culturally diverse in its offerings.

We paid $12 each. We...
