Kaikoura had a good museum pre-earthquake. As good exhibits and curation as you would find in any museum, anywhere. Now they've got one with REAL heart, and it's worth a trip for the pop-up exhibition on the earthquake and its effects, physical, social, and psychological, on this iconic seaside community.
Kaikoura has always been on the edge, and a little bit isolated. The mountains surrounding it on the land side, and the sea bashing up on the front porch, have made sure of that. And that's how the locals like it. They love their place, its wild weather, its wild whaling and fishing history, its small community, its being on the edge of things. This is reflected in the community feel of the museum, and the warmth of the whole place. The exhibits are of very high quality, and give you a real insight into the history of the town and area.
The quake exhibit is moving and very personal. Highly...

However we were saddened at the lack of cultural diversity represented throughout. There is nary a mention of the Maori history or culture in the area aside from an automated video telling a cultural legend.
With promotional material such as the rack card we picked up (which inspired our visit) featuring only one photo, a Maori woman and the words Oku Haerenga grossly misrepresents diverse culture and history.
It is deeply disturbing to use a Moari woman and language to promote this offering which pays no homage to this aspect of Kaikoura’s heritage.
I trust the organizers reconsider the use of such material to promote what is mostly a charming natural, social and economic history of this region. It is certainly not culturally diverse in its offerings.
We paid $12 each. We...
