Street Eats in Kaikoura: it's like a culinary treasure hunt, but without the map, or the treasure, but with a lot of food. Now, I’m not one to be easily impressed by the endless array of eateries that seem to pop up like geysers in Rotorua, but Street Eats had me in a bit of a pickle—mostly because I couldn't decide what to eat. The menu is so varied and delicious-looking that it felt like trying to choose a favorite child. If I had children. Which I don’t.
The owner was quite the gem, patiently explaining the popular dishes to me, as though I were some sort of food critic who didn’t understand what "popular" means. And let’s talk prices—honestly, I half expected to see the cost of my meal and need to sell a kidney. But lo and behold, Street Eats offers reasonable prices, especially for Kaikoura, where the price of a pie can sometimes make you reconsider your life choices.
The meal itself was satisfying, like a warm hug but from the inside. I was so pleased, in fact, that I’ve decided to return on my next trip through Kaikoura. It’s worth a little detour, like stopping to pick up a mate who’s on the way but not really.
Of course, it wasn’t all perfection. I found myself wishing for extra condiments—chili oil, fish sauce, sweet soy, you know, the sort of things that make you feel like a chef when you drizzle them over your food. And while we’re at it, a toilet onsite would be a nice touch. The public one across the road is there, but it’s like using a neighbor’s bathroom; it’s fine, but you’d really prefer your own.
In conclusion, if you’re in Kaikoura—or just within the area—Street Eats is well...
Read moreAfter reading some of the comments on here about authentic, flavoursome food, I was looking forward to trying Street Eats but was unfortunately really disappointed. The beef in the rendang was super tough and gristley, and the spring rolls, whilst huge, tasted strange (cheap/frozen?). The pork fried rice was OK but I also found a hair in it.
The restaurant was busy when I visited, and the staff were under the pump (down on staff, it seems). As a result, the service was rushed and stressful.
I'm not sure if I just visited on a bad night or if the reviews perhaps instead reflect the incentive (bribe?) of a free drink... Either way, it...
Read moreWent there after seeing reviews they are serving authentic Malaysian foods. Reached around 1:30PM and it was quiet. I introduced myself as a Malaysian and was recommended Beef Rendang (Coconut Rice). The rating given here is solely on the taste and authenticity, and it was somehow disappointing. Maybe I'm unlucky as the Beef Rendang on that day was way off the Malaysian's Beef Rendang standard. And, this is the first time in my entire life to get Beef Rendang with coleslaw salad, and they don't match at all. I hope the owner will take this positively to improve. Wish you...
