Pretty dodgy and hazardous - wouldn’t recommend bringing your kids or nice skis here. The rocky/icy terrain, with poor and little to no signage around the place will be the least of your troubles. Ask the locals in town they’ve got plenty of stories of the good old days and previous owners but this new company might be the end of that. If you do go, mind yourself getting off the chairlift on the way up the mountain, because if they slam the breaks on (as they do with no warning) you’ll find yourself hurtled off the back of a steep platform and into a pile of sharp rocks. No safety net to break your fall and yet somehow they’ll still claim it was all your fault and they will not be making...

Conditions can be variable so choose your day wisely. Best time to hit the slopes is generally August until season end. It can be hit and miss early season and needs a good amount of snowfall to really open up the terrain.
The general vibe and attitude has been lifted with a new operator on the Turoa side of Ruapehu. Refreshed cafes with great food options and fair pricing. Upgrades to lift systems improving reliability and a fully staffed positive team getting it done.
