Steampunk HQ initially caught my attention due to the numerous reviews praising its interactive installations, secret chambers, and cool atmosphere, sparking my imagination. However, my actual experience left much to be desired as I discovered several areas in need of improvement: The overall lighting was dim, requiring enhanced atmospheric illumination.

The interactivity of the installations was lacking; despite the presence of many buttons, pressing them yielded no response.

There was no clear delineation of which installations could be touched, with inconsistent signage, some handwritten, some printed, and some absent altogether.

Safety concerns in the backyard need to be addressed; I suggest establishing a designated area for miscellaneous items to prevent harm to children.

The lack of quality was evident, such as in the two installations in the yard with audiovisual effects; while the effects were impressive, exposed wires, abrupt endings to sound files, and a lack of clear instructions were disappointing.

The presence of too many miscellaneous items detracted from the overall aesthetic, such as the clutter within the train carriage and poorly maintained handles, giving the impression that the venue lacked attention to detail.

Overly obscure and excessively artistic installations may not be the best choice, considering the significant funds required for maintenance. If funds are insufficient to maintain such a large area of exhibits, it may be wise to reduce the scope and focus on refinement.

I strongly recommend taking inspiration from The Lost Gypsy Gallery in Papatowai, where although the number of exhibits is limited, each one demonstrates exceptional dedication and creativity, serving as a valuable example to emulate. Overall, Steampunk HQ falls short of being a recommended tourist destination in its...

While not entirely 'our thing' we were fascinated by the creativity and imagination that has gone into the numerous creations at Steampunk HQ. The cover charges are very reasonable. The hosts are enthusiastic, rugged but charming, and obviously love what they do.

Yes, the Infinity Portal is worth checking out, but is hardly the only thing here that will pique your own imagination. Stay a while, immerse yourself in the abundant ambiance. Ask questions! The staff will tell you a tale or two :)

Not all of the machinery is for show, there's a few that work, move and have function. You must explore, not just expect a 'lights and mirrors' show. This isn't Disney World, and that's what we liked about it.

The back yard area is full of works completed, works in progress and works of imagination yet to come. If you look closely and let your imagination go you might find yourself coming up with designs for some of the parts in the yard waiting to be used. Be sure to tell the staff, they would love to hear your...

Arrived before three thirty. Approximately 3:15 and waited. There were Two group's of different people Waiting. Myself, partner and out two children. And three other adults. Doors were locked but sign says open. Called the number on the board supplied. At 3.35 two woman exited out of the locked door. A large man opened the door and said they were closed for the day. I explained we had been standing and waiting, that we even contacted the number on the board. The second group explained the were also there before the closing time written on the door and they were travelling through from out of town. The large man was rather rude towards both groups and we were all dismissed. We were all shocked at the service provided. Our children were upset as we also had travelled from out of town to come. There hours online do NOT match the hours written on the building. Would have given zero stars if the option was available. The sign said....

Rating this place lowly because it is steampunk IN NAME ONLY. It is more of a scrap metal sculpture exhibit than it is anything else. No brass, no steam, no Victorian outfits, no goggles, and worst of all no moving parts aside from one thing that had some bike chains that moved a bit. Most of the scrap sculptures have a little sign with some background on them, usually in the form of a short story that seems like it was written by someone trying to emulate the SCP wiki. The local shops surrounding the "Steampunk" HQ are far better for genuine steampunk culture and most of the shop owners seem very enthusiastic about it. I think the Steampunk HQ is worth seeing as it is still a pretty neat place, but the name is very disingenuous and misleading. Do not come here if you're actually after steampunk culture, instead explore the shops nearby.

A Kiwi friend told me about Oamaru and Steakpunk HQ so I headed south to check it out. Oamaru is a Victorian time capsule - this place could and probably has been used as a movie set. As you come into town you can't miss the hissing steam locomotive outside Steampunk HQ. I'm guessing Steampunk HQ was formerly a warehouse space. It feels a bit haunted house walking in. And then the adventure begins - room after room of vintage industrial and medical equipment welded together by mad scientists into something both amazing and creepy. Outside the yard is filled with rusted vehicles that would be right at home in a Mad Max film. Pro tip: Don't miss Buggyrobot just a half block away - a sculpture studio with robots made from found materials and household appliances.
