Bergen's Maritime Museum presents Norwegian seafaring through the ages - richly illustrated with beautiful models, full-size boats and archaeological finds.
Are you wondering why Norway is called a maritime nation? Then the Bergen Maritime Museum can give you the answer. We tell the story of Norwegian shipping through thousands of years, of Norwegian seamen as "the freighters of the world" and of Bergen - the maritime city that always has its eyes on the world.
Stories from the sea through 2000 years Wander through the museum and let yourself be enthralled by a large collection of useful objects, ship models, ship paintings and marine archaeological finds. Individual objects with exciting stories, which are also pieces in a larger narrative about international trade, technology, sailors' life, war and migration. The Maritime Museum is about all this, and more.
Exploration and recreation The museum building is an architectural gem in stone and glass, centrally located in a peaceful and almost car-free neighborhood on the university hill. With walking distance to the centre, we offer a break from busy city life. The surrounding areas are suitable for exploration and recreation, and offer several museums, parks and cafes.
Film – audio guide – guided tours We recommend our guests to watch the spectacular film "Det brente skipet", which deals with a Western Norwegian discovery of a ship burial from the Viking Age. The film is produced by the local company Arkikon (duration 22 minutes, Norwegian voice, English subtitles).

You can see an original logboat, original parts from one of the world's oldest Viking ships - the Kvalsund ship from Sunnmøre - in addition to unique models of both Danish and Norwegian ship finds from the period. As well there are small boats and freighters used along the coast, into fjords, on water and rivers are called utility boats. Besides models of DS Constitutionen - Norway's first steamship from 1826 - and DS Bergen from 1852, the department has a rich selection of models of various steamships. Among them the American paddle steamer DS Savannah, which in 1819 was the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. The exhibition contains a number of models of ships from the city's tanker and liner fleet. There are also sections that describe life as a sailor, ship salvages, and a 'funny' history of England attacking Dutch merchant boats in Bergen harbour.
