El Parque del Amor (the Park of Love), was inaugurated, quite appropriately, on Valentine Day, in 1991. It is located on Malecón de la Reserva. "Malecón" in Latin America signifies a road, esplanade, or a sort of a boardwalk, usually along a body of water. Malecón de la Reserva is a middle part of the longer scenic walkway Malecón de Miraflores, its north-eastern extension is Malecón Cisneros, and its south-western part is Malecón Armendariz. Malecón de la Reserva (as many other locations in Lima) is named after the soldiers, mostly newly drafted and inexperienced recruits, or reservists, died in the bloody battles of San Juan and Chorrillos, and Miraflores, during the War of the Pacific, in January 1881. This war, relatively unknown outside of Peru, is still being remembered and re-lived in both Peru and Bolivia, the countries that incurred very serious territorial losses to Chili. The Love Park is small in size, with its ornate decorative elements laid in colorful ceramic tiles, very resemblant of Barcelona Park Güell designed by Gaudi. The centerpiece of the park is the monumental statue "El Beso" ("The Kiss") by the distinguished Peruvian sculptor Víctor Delfín (b. 1927) depicting himself kissing his wife. The park is designed is several succeeding or cascading levels, and it offers unparalleled vistas of the Pacific Ocean and, depending on the infamous Lima cloudiness, the views of the neighboring districts of Barranco (usually seen very well due to its proximity) and Chorrillos to the south and the port city of Callao all the way to the north-west. Even though almost every part of Malecón de Miraflores features those magnificent views, the Love Park possesses even great and more breathtaking vantage point to enjoy the...
Read moreThere are many parks along the spectacular Malecon (“boardwalk” in Spanish) of Miraflores, Lima's affluent and picturesque seaside district, and Parque del Amor, the Park of Love, is the main one. In fact, it's Peru's most famous and was chosen by National Geographic as being one of the most romantic destinations in the world and is one of the most visited sites on the Malecon Cisneros.
What I like about the parks along the Malecon is that each has one or more unique characteristic features or attractions and at Parque del Amor, this is the "El Beso" (The Kiss) sculpture by Peruvian artist Victor Delfín. It's very large and depicts a couple in each other's arms embraced in an intimate kiss. As well as a flower garden in the shape of hearts, another feature of the park is the surrounding undulating wall decorated with mosaic scripted romantic poems and verses by well-known Peruvian poets. It's been said that the park is inspired by Antoni Gaudí's Parc Guell in Barcelona.
Fittingly, Parque del Amor was inaugurated on Valentines Day, February 14, 1993, yes the day of love, and apparently each year on "Valentine's Day" there is a massive attendance, and the "Longest Kiss" contest among the attending couples takes place. The Park of Love is a perfect location for couples to see the sunset in Lima.
There can be little doubt, the Malecon of Miraflores is one of the most beautiful places in Lima and Parque del Amor is a main attraction there. Your visit is highly...
Read moreVery scenic park with an ocean view in Miraflores. Love Park is located on the cliffs of Chorrillos overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's surrounded by walls of romantic quotes scripted in mosaic tiles and a monumental statue of two lovers embracing each other in the center of the park.
El Parque del Amor was an unexpected surprise to us since; it is a on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific ocean devoted entirely to romance.
The poet Antonio Cilloniz had lamented that "In the cities, they do not build monuments to lovers", a reaction, to all the monuments in South America (and everywhere else) devoted to those who had distinguished themselves in battle by either winning or dying.
Miraflores decided to be the exception and they opened the Parque del Amor in 1993 on Valentines day. The park features a prominent statue of two lovers in a passionate embrace over Cilloniz's very own words.
The major sculpture in the park is of "El Beso", a couple engaged in a passionate kiss. It was sculpted by Victor Delfin.
The sculpture celebrates the lovers who gather to catch the sunset on the waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is said that the locals compete for the longest kiss under this statue.
Walking here at most times of the day and night you can see couples here, kissing or snuggled close together.
