Santo Antão Church — Attraction in Évora

This incident happened on December 22nd 2024 during the mass of 12PM.

My husband and I are practicing Catholics and were visiting this church with a lot of excitement to experience Mass in a new place. I speak Portuguese, but my husband does not, yet we both felt drawn to attend and pray together in the universal language of our faith. Living in the Netherlands, we know how special it is to share the beauty of the Catholic Mass wherever we are in the world.

What we experienced, however, was nothing short of shocking and deeply upsetting. During the Mass, the priest suddenly stopped and sarcastically asked the congregation if they were “sleeping.” He went on to say that “it looks like you’re all asleep” because, in his opinion, the prayers weren’t being said loudly enough. I was horrified—not only by the lack of respect shown to the faithful gathered there but also by the insensitivity of such a remark. How could he assume everyone’s background or circumstances? My husband, for example, does not speak Portuguese fluently, so he couldn’t participate as loudly as others might, but his presence there was an act of faith and devotion. To be chastised like that, indirectly or not, felt humiliating.

Then, at the end of Mass, the priest invited everyone to attend the Christmas “Missa do Galo,” but added with a tone of mockery: “Please come awake, and not like today.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. A Mass is supposed to be a place of reverence, of connection to God, and of welcome. Instead, we left feeling alienated and disrespected, as if our presence and prayers were not enough.

I’ve thought about this incident the entire day, and I feel such profound sadness. This kind of behavior is the exact opposite of what the Catholic Church should stand for—love and compassion. In a world where so many are already drifting away from faith, these actions do nothing but push people further from the Church. It breaks my heart to know that what should have been a moment of spiritual nourishment instead left us...

The Church of Santo Antão or Igreja Paroquial de Santo Antão is located in the famous Praça do Giraldo. This is undoubtedly another of the city's many magnificent religious monuments. And one of the most visited by tourists in Évora. The commissioner of the Church of Santo Antão was Cardinal D. Henrique, Archbishop of Évora. He ordered it to be built on the site of the medieval Chapel of Santo Antoninho. To enable its construction, the Roman Triumphal Arch was demolished. Its construction dates back to the beginning of 1557. It is an example of the late Renaissance period and has the characteristics of the so-called hall churches of the time. Its interior is a single hall. The Church of Santo Antão suffered some setbacks early on. It was shaken by a strong earthquake in 1568, which led to work being carried out in 1570 to consolidate the columns and vaults. The interior of the Church of Santo Antão consists of three vaulted naves with granite columns, five sections and three chapels behind the high altar. The five sections of the naves are marked by impressive Ionic columns, which give the whole space...

Pior lugar para entrar. Funcionária que fica na porta extremamente mau educada! Estivemos ali no dia 17/08 por volta dos 12:55h / 13:00, estava com meu sobrinho que é uma CRIANÇA (ele é alto para idade dele) e a FUNCIONÁRIA que infelizmente não sei o nome, mas ela é loira e usa óculo e tem por voltar de uns 65 anos. Essa senhora foi aos GRITOS com meu sobrinho dentro da igreja, esse absurdo aconteceu por ele ter tirado umas fotos das imagens! Tinhamos acabado de chegar na cidade e ali era nosso primeiro local de visita, entramos por ser uma igreja e para agradecer. E ele começou a passear pela igreja estava tirando fotos e a funcionária o abordou falando "você vai pagar por essas fotos!", ela parecia um cachorro de guarda atrás dele cobrando 0.50 cêntimos e ele o tempo todo falando que não tinha terminado de visitar, INFELIZMENTE A IGREJA VIROU COMÉRCIO. Eu informei para aquela senhora que tinha apenas cartão e se ela tinha MBA ou máquina de cartão e ela disse que não. Estava constrangida pela confusão que a senhora nos fez passar e seus gritos dentro da igreja, local que ela deveria ter mais respeito, exigindo um pagamento de 0.50 cêntimos pelas fotos que ele havia tirado. Ela estava inconformada por não termos dinheiro em espécie e eu mais ainda por uma igreja obrigar o pagamento por fotos, nunca tinha visto isso! Nem em Fátima que um Santuário tivemos esse tipo de problema. Em tom de ameaças essa senhora retrucou novamente e ao gritos que só sairiamos dali depois de pagar 0.50 cêntimos e se fosse necessário ficariamos preso na igreja até pagar o valor. Entreguei minha bolsa para essa senhora e disse que ela poderia revistar e o dinheiro que ela encontra-se ficaria para a igreja, a senhora quer? Ela não aceitou. Mas manteve a ameaça de que só sairiamos após pagar! Depois de muita confusão meu sobrinho disse que iria apagar as fotos. Tinha um caixa do ATM na praça e eu poderia ter ido lá levantar o dinheiro e ter retornado e fazer a doação, mas pela falta de educação dessa senhora e pela forma que ela o tratou saimos e não retornei e nem irei retorna. Continuamos nosso passeio e fomos em outros locais onde pagamos seus respectivos valores sem questionar, mas não retornamos para pagar os 0.50 cêntimos! E sempre aquela premiça: "Pagamos, doamos 1.000.00 € em um local onde nos tratame bem, mas damos 0.01 cêntimo onde nos tratam mal." Não é sobre o valor, não é sobre doar e sim pela falta de educação dessa senhora que os gritos e a forma proferiu e a forma que nos tratrou, ela o mandava calar a boca pois ali ela era AUTORIDADE! Essa mulher não deveria estar guardando as portas de uma igreja e sim as fortas do inferno, tenho certeza que o seu temperamento daria muito mais certo! Tudo que o cristianismo prega essa senhora fez e demonstrou o contrário.... Humilhou uma criança, ameaçou, gritou, julgou e ainda por cima, se acha como dona da razão por ser uma idosa... A senhora pode ser idosa e por esse motivo, que não faltei com respeito e não levantei o tom de voz, pois a senhora merecia ouvir os mesmos desaforos que fez com meu sobrinho. E pela sua idade já deveria saber que a EDUCAÇÃO é a chave para tudo e só para a senhora ficar informada A SENHORA NÃO MANDA EM NADA! EXPERIÊNCIA HORRÍVEL!
