Between the alleys of the walled city, there is the Old Cathedral. This place has special meaning for those who attended the University of Coimbra. Annually, on a Thursday night in May, the students wear their costumes and gather around the staircase of the church door. From there, the Monumental Serenade of Coimbra is played. It is announcing the celebration of the Burning of the Ribbons. It is a milestone in the academic life cycle. The Old Cathedral is not only part of the history of Coimbra but also of Portugal. In 1139, after the Battle of Ourique, Dom Afonso, just declared king, chose Coimbra to host the Portuguese kingdom. He decided to build this new cathedral for the capital. The construction of its main structure lasted until the beginning of the 13th century. Still in 1185, was crowned here the second king of Portugal, Dom Sancho I. The architectural relevance of the Old Cathedral is revealed by its state of conservation. It is a romantic exemplar from the time of the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Christians. Even so, important interventions occurred in the 16th century. From that period, the presence of the Renaissance style in the south chapel and the two portals of the north facade stands out, besides the tiles inside the church. The Se Velha de Coimbra is a gem that beautifully captures the essence of medieval Portugal. Located in the heart of Coimbra, this ancient cathedral is steeped in history and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the past. The entrance fee of 2.5 euros is well worth it, considering the rich experience that awaits you inside. The cathedral’s interior is a stunning blend of Romanesque architecture with intricate details that reflect its storied history. The cloisters are particularly captivating, offering a peaceful retreat that contrasts with the bustling city outside. One little-known fact about the Se Velha is its role as a fortress during times of conflict, evident in its fortress-like exterior. This dual purpose adds a layer of intrigue to your visit, as you can almost feel the echoes of history in its thick stone walls. A tip for first-time visitors: take your time exploring the various chapels and don’t miss the ornate Gothic altar, which is a true masterpiece. If you’re interested in history or architecture, this place is a must-see during your stay in Coimbra. However, be prepared for some steep climbs to reach it, as the cathedral is situated on a hill. Overall, Se Velha de Coimbra offers a rich, immersive experience that is both educational and awe-inspiring, making it a highlight of any trip to this historic city.

I was in Coimbra the first week of December, white, strong and beautiful, it's surprising. It is rich in traditions, smells, sounds and melancholy. They had warned me that Coimbra would surprise me and it was so ... it is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. History and culture come together in a continuous emotion as we discover its treasures, It is a must to visit the University, "Universidade de Coimbra", today recognized UNESCO World Heritage and the Biblioteca Joanina where you can leave the heart to the richness and solemnity of his books and decorations. The Baroque Chapel of San Michele, one of the most beautiful parts of the university complex, is extraordinary, with frescoes and azulejos inside giving life to something unique. In the historic center, in the oldest part. among narrow and steep streets, cobblestones, small courtyards, stairways and medieval arches, the old Cathedral of Coimbra appears, in Romanesque style from the 12th century. The look becomes attentive meeting very particular buildings, with objects hanging on the walls, graffiti on the walls and banners on the windows ... the repúblicas, the houses for students, Their origin dates back to the XIV century, since then the Repúblicas represent the ideal of a different lifestyle. Coimbra is a treasure to be explored, here you can breathe Portugal away from "everything for tourists". The city unrolls under our steps like the notes of fado ... which is sung in the street.

Sé Velha Type: cathedral Time spent: 30 min Parking: available (small) Bike parking: not available WC: available Price: 2+ EUR Coimbra has been the seat of a bishopric since the 5th century. In 1139, King Afonso Henriques decided to finance the building of a new cathedral. The definitive impulse to the project was given by Bishop Miguel Salomão, who helped pay for the works. In 1185, King Sancho I, the second King of Portugal, was crowned in the new cathedral, indicating that the building work was advanced. The basic building was finished in the first decades of the 13th century. In the 16th century, there were many additions to the cathedral. The basic architecture and structure of the Romanesque building were, nevertheless, left intact.

This is the old Cathedral of Coimbra. It was about 3 minutes walk from our little hotel so we decided to stop by. It was a surprise to walk up a few steps and suddenly find ourselves in the cloister walk. I felt pulled back on time by hundreds of years. It was so peaceful and we spend quite some time walking around and sitting in the arches and enjoying the atmosphere of this lovely place. I highly recommend a visit. The church looks a little intimidating from the exterior but you will find yourself immersed in a medieval world the moment you enter.

Beautiful Romanesque cathedral with adjacent monastery. Some of the outside is currently under renovation. The main altarpiece has been added during the 1500's along with the Northern chapel dedicated to St. Peter. It tells the story of Mary and Jesus from birth to ascension. The chapel contains the retable of Jesus and the apostles. When I stepped inside, it felt majestic. It's a melange of really old foundation with some Renaissance art and architecture sprinkled on top.
