The Fortaleza de São Tiago in Funchal was built in the 17th century to protect the city and port from pirate attacks. Until the early 1990s, the fortress served exclusively for military purposes. Today it houses the Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu de Arte Contemporânea), which shows works by renowned Portuguese artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to the exhibitions, many other cultural events also take place. The Restaurante do Forte, which is part of the fortress and is often used for larger celebrations such as weddings, is highly recommended. When we were there cool 😎 oldtimers were standing in the entrance!

Fortaleza de São Tiago, also known as Saint James's Fort, is a 16th-century fort located in Funchal, Madeira. It is one of the oldest and most important forts in the Portuguese archipelago. The fort was built in 1567 to protect the city from pirates and invaders. It has a star-shaped plan, with four bastions and a moat. The fort was extensively renovated in the 17th century, and again in the 19th century. Today, Fortaleza de São Tiago is a popular tourist destination. It is open to the public, and offers stunning views of the city and the bay. The fort also houses a museum, which exhibits artifacts from the fort's history.

Not a pleasant experience. There is a guy who goes by the name of Khaled who harasses women that are sitting solo on the beach. He comes to chat then starts touching without consent. He offers massages and even when saying no he goes ahead and keeps on touching. He harassed two of our group on different days. Then on the third day we saw him going to the toilet, put his swimwear inside out, and then walk to a woman and change it in front of her. This is not acceptable.

Exploring a small part of Funchals history. This fort shines bright in a warm yellow and therefor stands out immediately. With three levels an a lot of hidden corners there is much to explore. I was there almost by myself, allowing some nice photos. There is a restaurant within the fort and anotherone to the right. You can see some vintage cars in the front yard and some beautiful plants growing here and there. The view from the Fort is stunning, too.

The color of the fort and location on the water is cool but you can't go inside it at all. If you're looking for some beautiful pictures with the colors/water and have time it's a nice place to walk to as you pass through the busy tourist area and it begins to get quieter. I'd recommend continuing on a bit up to the area beyond it where you get some pretty views. There were people swimming in the water and laying out so that's an option as well.
