We were really looking forward to exploring The Art of Open Doors in Funchal, especially after hearing so much about it. While there are definitely some creative and colorful painted doors scattered around the old town, we expected a bit more in terms of variety and overall impact.

It felt like a few streets had some cool pieces, but many of the doors were either unremarkable or starting to look a little worn. Maybe we just caught it on a quiet day, but it didn’t quite live up to the hype for us.

Still, it’s a fun excuse to wander through the charming backstreets, and we did find a few gems along the way. Just don’t go in expecting a full-blown outdoor...

Rua Santa Maria is a street of mainly cafes and restarants in the old town but artists have made a feature of the doors by painting them in fantastic pictures and patterns which seem to change on a regular basis. It is known as the Art of Open Doors, although most of them are physically closed, of course. As you stroll down the street browsing the restaurant menus and getting greeted by waiters you can always pretend that you are just here...
