We hiked about 7km from Farol de Alfanzina along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, and it was absolutely incredible. The views of the cliffs, sea caves, and natural arches—especially the Benagil Cave from above—were unreal.
We hike a lot, and found the trail quite easy overall, though there are some steep sections. That said, the cliffs are massive and unguarded in many areas, so it’s definitely not a place to let your guard down.
It got really busy with tourists on the way back, so we grabbed an Uber instead of doubling back—which worked out great. One of the most scenic and memorable hikes we’ve done....
Read moreIt is true that the lighthouse is open for visits on Wednesday only from 1:30 - 4:30. However we found that the keeper does tours for safety at set times, which were 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 on the date we visited. These times were posted on the gate to the facility. The keeper opens and closes the gate, so be on time and don’t wander away or you may loose the entry you wished for. We enjoyed the visit. Read moreThe lighthouse is open to the public for free on Wednesdays at 2.15 pm. Also open at later hours on Wednesdays. Most locals do not know this. I found it very interesting and you can climb to the top and even go up a ladder into the lamp chamber at the top. You have to arrive on time because the guard/ lighthousekeeper lets any visitors enter but has to lock the gates once you enter in order to give you the tour.
