José do Canto Garden- €4 admission with no senior or student discounts. It is primarily an arboretum though there is a rose area (a couple of roses were blooming already) and also some camellias. The trees are labeled with their scientific names and their Portuguese and English common names as well as where they are from. There are some very impressive tree specimens in particular two Australian Ficus (Fig) trees that have substantial buttress roots. The bamboo groves are nice to see, too. There are also artful informative azulejo tiles and a small chapel.

Very nice gardens with plenty of benches to sit down and relax. €5 admission fee and it comes with a map of the gardens. There are clean toilets located near the Palace, the ones next to the Pond were locked. The gentleman working at the ticket booth is very friendly and will give you a quick explanation as he hands you the map. Doors close at 7 pm but you can stay longer, if by the time you leave the door is closed all you have to do is ring the bell located just below the security camera near the entrance and someone will open the door for you remotely.

Absolutely the most pathetic botanical garden I’ve been in my entire life. (I visited over 20 botanical gardens worldwide). First of all the garden isn’t looked after, in every corner there are either dead branches or dead vegetation lying around (a lot, it’s like a deserted park), also there was a lot of trash lying between bushes or along the paths. In some portions the vegetation is so overgrown that you are unable to follow the road comfortably, it’s like walking through an unattended forest. Also, mind where you are stepping because there are a lot of chunks of dead wood on the paths and you can easily trip over or sprain your ankle. The pinnacle of the entire garden was the lousiest rose garden I’ve seen in my life, all the bushes were poorly attended, they looked sick, and the hoses from the dripping system was laying around in a very unaesthetic manner. the castle from the garden is not open to the public. The person attending the garden is cashing a check each month without doing a minimum desirable work. All the infrastructure is old, beaten up, broken and poorly organized. The information boards of the various tree species are worn off, some are unreadable and some are unreachable due to the overgrown vegetation (the boards are tiny and you have to get close in order to read them). You will find other decent botanical gardens in the city which are either free of have a lower admission fee, and they are far better watched attended and looked after. Also the garden is quite small, 10 minutes are enough to do a entire circle around it (even an extra reason to be better attended, it’s small). You can have a far better experience visiting one of the lagoons on the island rather than visiting this pathetic “garden”. Make sure you save time and money and avoid visiting this place.

Once, a long long time ago, this little botanical garden must have been a jewel. But today, strolling on its walkways it clearly feels unloved, overgrown, unmaintained. Don't dare to take the small trails of the main road. The rose garden is anything but a wild overgrown grass field. Don't hold the stair handles, except if you want tetanus, they are rusted to the core. Toilets are dirty. The bar, a small trailer in a corner of the gardens near what looks like a pool, is rather unwelcoming. Wave the entry fee, it probably just to covers the cost of the people who make you pay it. Or set a reasonable fee that will allow the grounds to be somewhat better maintained. Avoid the place if you get easily depressed.

Seriously, visit any of the other municipal free-gardens that are more welcoming, community oriented, and better cared for … the admission here is 5 Euros and albeit impressive specimens in this garden, they’re not well tended. Maybe during Spring/Summer there might be better blooms, but all the buildings were closed & private when we visited; And park benches are not abundant and not placed where you want them, to contemplate botanical specimens; Almost nobody (no visitors) in the garden. It’s very OK IMHO to skip this site.

An absolute MUST for a great local walking adventure. The gardens were much larger than expected, which was a great surprise and didn’t feel rushed since we had no other plans. We spend a good 2 hours enjoying the many (and well labeled) trees and plants. We came in February when many of the plants and trees were dormant but still very much worth the visit. There a good bathroom options throughout and very easy to access trails. Loved the wild roaming chickens with their baby chicks!!
