While many visitors to Porto flock to the well-known Jardim do Morro for its iconic views, Parque de São Roque offers a different kind of experience: a tranquil, historical retreat on the city's eastern side. Originally the grounds of a large estate known as Quinta da Lameira, this park was acquired by the city in 1979 and has since become a cherished "green lung" for the neighborhood of Campanhã. Stepping into Parque de São Roque feels like a journey back in time. The park is laid out on a series of terraces, a design that gives it the feel of a romantic 19th-century garden. It's filled with hidden nooks, charming water features, and elegant architectural details like fountains and a small cave. The highlight for many visitors is the famous labyrinth made of boxwood hedges, a fun and visually striking feature that kids and adults alike enjoy navigating. The park is also home to Casa São Roque, a magnificent manor house that has been transformed into a contemporary art center. While the house itself requires a separate ticket, it adds a cultural dimension to the visit, with its exhibitions and events. The surrounding garden is a work of art in itself, boasting a collection of over 200 camellias, a plant for which Porto is particularly famous. For those looking for a quiet place to read, stroll, or just escape the urban bustle, Parque de São Roque is an excellent choice. It's a bit off the main tourist path, which means it rarely feels crowded. With its lush greenery, historical charm, and a few good viewpoints of the city and the Douro River, it offers a peaceful and refreshing alternative to the more bustling city...

I would like to share about Camellia even that brought color and brightness to Park de São Roque. Not even the unstable weather that occurred over the weekend prevented hundreds of people from going to Parque de São Roque to enjoy the flower that, by tradition, confirms the arrival of spring: the camellia. That green space was filled with colors at the twenty-eighth exhibition of camellias in Porto. The park now has more than five hectares of green area, where you can find more than 200 (two hundred) camellias of 40 (forty) different varieties, many of them centuries-old. In this edition, the Best Camellia Award was awarded to the camelia reticulata "Valentine’s Day", by Pilar Bargiela Rodriguez, with the camelia japonica "Little Babe Vanegated", by Fernando Valije, in second place. My wife and I went to this park together last Sunday to see the...

Begin your enchanting journey at the top entrance on Rua das Antas, where the initial view sets the tone for the entire experience. As you meander through the garden's elevated paths, be prepared to be captivated by the breathtaking vistas that unfold before you. While the elevated location provides a unique charm, it's important to note the challenging accessibility. The steep paths and uneven terrain might pose a difficulty for some visitors, especially those with mobility constraints. Nevertheless, for those willing to make the journey, the reward of the mesmerizing scenery makes it worthwhile. Cap off your visit with a stop at the charming Casa de São Roque, a delightful finale to your garden adventure. The combination of natural beauty and architectural charm makes this route a truly memorable exploration of both landscape and culture. Enjoy the journey!
