Visiting the Communism Museum in Brașov was was an incredibly interesting and thought-provoking experience. From the carefully curated artifacts and settings that transport you back to the era of communism in Romania, to the deeply moving personal stories that were shared, everything about the museum was expertly crafted and sensitively presented.
One of the most powerful aspects of the museum was the way in which it brought to life the experiences of ordinary people living under communist rule. Through first-hand accounts and personal anecdotes, visitors are able to gain a real insight into what life was like during this tumultuous period of Romanian history. From the daily struggles of life under a repressive regime, to the moments of hope and resistance that kept people going, these stories really bring the past to life in a way that is both powerful and thought-provoking.
Of course, some aspects of the museum are quite shocking, and it can be difficult to confront the realities of life under communism. However, I think it's important that we do so, in order to fully understand the impact that this period had on Romania and its people. The museum handles these difficult themes with sensitivity and respect, making sure that visitors are able to engage with them in a meaningful and respectful way.
Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to the Communism Museum in Brașov. It's an incredibly well-curated and thoughtfully presented exhibition that offers a real insight into one of the most complex and fascinating periods of Romanian history. Whether you're a history buff, a political science student, or just someone looking to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us, this museum is definitely...
Read moreA brilliantly put together museum - stylish and attractive and playing - to a certain degree - on the aesthetic of the time, but then presenting this in clear contrast with deeply personal accounts of what it was to live under communism in Romania. These accounts are understated, not sensational, and frequently marked by dark humour - and all the more powerful as a result. The wall on women's reproductive rights resonates particularly strongly in the current global context.
Anybody who just looks at the interesting things (and they are interesting and quirky) will miss the point - they must be understood in the context of the accounts that accompany them. In that way it carefully walks the line of nostalgia (and Western fetishism) of communism, and its lived reality.
Very ethnographically focused - only cursory detail on the political development of communism and the more complex relationship with the USSR, but that's not a complaint. The cafe was also lovely, great to try some Nechezol.
For people decrying the price for the size of the place, I'd say it represents fantastic value for something that is so well thought out thematically, and provides greater depth than simply a cursory glance at vaguely interesting things.
I spent about two hours here and read about 95% of the accounts and had a drink at the cafe, but did not watch the full video in the...
Read moreThis was my favorite museum experience in all of Brasov. This museum is unique in so many ways and unlike any museum I have ever been to anywhere in the world! You can touch the items, open and close furniture doors, read scribbles in school books, and hear the music of the time. This interactive experience really gives you a real feel (pun intended) for the era. There is also NO "picture tax" or fee for photography, so touch, listen, and snap pictures! Through detailed accounts of real people who lived in the area during Communism, you get to laugh and cry and learn about their past. This is one of the most multi-language friendly museums I have been to in Brasov and even better than many in Bucharest. With the exception of the entryway, everything is translated into perfect English and the woman who works there speaks amazingly. I regret I did not ask her name, but she is incredibly kind and knowledgable. Throughout my two visits, I heard guests have in depth conversations with her and she appeared to truly enjoy sharing her knowledge and appreciative of their visit. Don't miss out on trying Nechezol at the...
