Fine dining without fussiness. I always enjoy the atmosphere, food and wine here. Nothing here is an afterthought— the wine list and menu seem to result from careful attention.
Everything speaks of quality with a refined air that isn’t stuffy. The staff are sincere in their recommendations, and the flavors offer the rare opportunity to experience the cuisine of Romania’s Hungarian-speaking minority of Transylvania.
Take the gulyaș, for example. It’s a relatively clear soup from a skillfully made beef stock, with attentively-cut and cooked potatoes and carrots. It is neither overloaded with paprika nor red pepper paste, and the stock was clarified by an expert.
The sarmale are so different from my grandmother’s Moldavian version. The cabbage is much less sour and the leaves spine-free and tender; the lean and flavorful filling mostly meat with very little, if any, rice; the spices balanced and restrained.
It occurred to me as I was preparing to leave that I felt light and alert from a healthily prepared meal that at home would have left me slumbering away the afternoon!
In these pandemic times they will immediately turn on the heaters and provide lap robes and, best of all, attentive and swift service of piping hot plates to outdoor diners.
Don’t overlook the famous Szekely potato bread in the basket- this is another regional treasure.
The delicious and uncommon Issa Feteasca Neagra and the good selection of palinca from cherries, pear, etc. show their thoughtful curating...
Read moreTL:DR: Decent, somewhat bland food. Nice staff, organisational problems. No lock on the toilet. Very nice menu.
First of All, staff was really nice and brought a nice Flair to this beautiful restaurant with a well thought out menu consisting of traditional transylvanian dishes. However, they forgot to mention that their card reading machine was broken and when we tried to pay I was presented with the only option of going to the nearest ATM (which was 10 minutes away) to withdraw some cash to pay for our meal. Not great. The food itself was decent and as I mentioned before, the menu was well composed and balanced, especially considering it contained some vegetarian dishes, which is not common in romania. It lacked some salt and seasoning and some was sweet, yet again, it was decent. Service was nice, albeit slow, especially towards the end. The focus was somewhat weird, us rating cheese, starters and main course with specialised cutlery, unnecessary for such an easy-going, relaxed place. I'm just briefly going yo touch on the topic of toilets, since they contained no lock and I stumbled upon an angry local doing his business (the same later happened to me), which was a bit awkward. There is however an upside, them using reusable tools instead of paper towels, protecting the environment.
All in all we had an okay time, although there were a number of issues that made our visit a...
