Novoarbatsky Bridge ( Kalininsky Bridge ) is a road bridge across the Moskva River in Moscow . It connects the Western Administrative District (Kutuzovsky Prospekt) and Central (Novy Arbat). One of the first bridges in Russia with an all-welded steel-reinforced concrete superstructure and a roadway slab compressed with high-strength reinforcement 1 .

The creation of the bridge was part of the General Plan of 1935. Design began in 1939. Sketch designs were completed by several teams of authors. According to the project of the studio of the architect Alexander Vlasov , the bridge consisted of a three-span beam. The river span, the longest, had to be supported by arches of metal pipes filled with concrete. The project did not provide for the construction of coastal abutments. The design department of trust No. 3 of Glavvodspetsstroy (author - engineer NI Ermolin) developed two alternative options, which differed in the solution of coastal spans. In the first - concrete spans were chosen, in the second - steel 5] .

Various architects undertook the architectural design: L. Polyakov , A. Burov and N. Colley . According to Polyakov's project, monumental arches were planned on the coastal pillars, which supported massive pylons decorated with bas-reliefs with complex staircases leading to the embankment. The abutments on the opposite bank were supposed to be decorated with high obelisks. The main element of the composition in Burov's project was to be a wide staircase descending to the embankment along the river. Monumental propylaea towered over the staircase . Colley's project envisaged the installation of huge sculptures above the pillars, which symbolized the unity of the Soviet Union withWestern Ukraine . The arches of the main span were decorated with overlays designed to create a sense of monumentality [6] .

The engineering solution of Vlasov and the architectural design of Collie were chosen for implementation, but this was prevented by the outbreak of the war [6] .

They returned to the design of the bridge in 1950, the previous projects were no longer considered, new ones were presented in March 1951 at a meeting of the architectural council of Moscow . According to the plan of the architect Boris Nadezhin, the arch of the bridge with a span of 162 m was supposed to be reinforced concrete and faced with granite, while two smaller arches of 42 meters would block the coastal passages, the width of the bridge was planned at 47 meters [3] .

According to another project by architect K. Yakovlev and engineer M. S. Rudenko, the bridge blocked the river with one steel arch with a span of 162 m and a width of 47 m. The members of the council accepted this project for execution. The design assignment for the construction was prepared in 1954 by Mosgiprotrans and Transmostproekt of the USSR Ministry of Railways [7] . Initially, it was proposed to install monumental columns with sculptures on the bridge, symbolizing the glory of the Soviet people, but this did not happen [3] .

The authors of the approved project of the bridge are engineers M. S. Rudenko, S. Terekhin, M. Kryuchkov and architects K. Yakovlev and A. Dushkin , co-authors - architects M. Markovsky , A. Susorov, B. Tkhor [3 . The bridge was built in 1954-1957. Mostootryad № 4 of the Ministry of Transport Construction.
