Horwood's Farm — Attraction in Ekurhuleni Ward 18

It's a small skate park but a great place to skate and to teach our kids to skate and ride. The only problem I have is that there is no security person patrolling the skate park area itself. We were enjoying our skate session but we felt like if we did not stay right near our stuff, it would have been stolen. While I was helping my 4 year old ride his push bike, I noted some local kids had come down the path and were now sitting close to our bag and my skateboard. I had that feeling we all get when you know something is up. I watched them start to move closer and closer to our stuff while trying not to be seen moving. I went straight over and sat down by our bag and my board. Eventually I heard them grumble to each other, get up and leave when they saw I was not going to move again. I truly think that the skate area would feel a lot safer if there was someone stationed and patrolling the area at all times. I know we only had Coke and chips in our bag as we always leave everything valuable at home but, I still hate to have to watch everything instead...

The park is currently doing renovations and what sounds like upgrades. Adding - so I am told by vendors- a skate rink/ skateboard arena and an amphitheatre. This will definitely be a step up and an added attraction to the park and not just for the market. But in the process the market is suffering as they have had to make quite a few changes to accomodate both the vendors as well as the parks builders etc. I do like the set up for all the food vendors... All in a big circle of sorts... So they are close together and makes choosing much easier. I also noted because the competition is now up close and personal, That all (most) food portions have increased in size quite dramatically. And, improved presentation was quite obvious. This will be good for business. Now... How long the building is going to take is anybodys guess. Always...

Horwoods Farm is located just off the main road of Edenvale and is a little hidden away, situated next to the cemetery. But don't let that scare you away: the park is full of trees and lawns, which are mowed often, and there are cycling and walking paths throughout. There is currently construction being done on the river in terms of reinforcing the sides and apparently an island bird sanctuary is also in the works. There is a lovely children's play area with swings and climbing sets, as well as exercise tools throughout the park. The highlight is the skate park on the far side, where kids with bicycles and skateboards can practice their skills. There are also benches and some braai spots to make a day of it.
