A super experience! A very varied menu which is highlighted by exceptional service by friendly, knowledgeable waitrons. One can have food delivered to one's car in the traditional "roadhouse" fashion or stretch your legs in the upgraded seated area, which now includes a deck... A great alternative, especially if you are a group with numerous vehicles.
Good music plays through a quality sound system with Big Screen to view video, helping to create a uber cool atmosphere and avoids the age old painful issue of roadhouses worldwide where one is stuck between folks determined to outshine each other's car sound playing totally different music and their equipment is not necessarily of as high quality as they may believe!? .... At Kota Joe, it is out of the question, as their music is loud enough to discourage that practice, but not so loud as to be uncomfortable, which is a welcomed change.
I mentioned the wide range of food available on the menu, which would be impossible to go through, but I'll comment on the central basis of the signature dishes which follow the brand of "KOTA". It is an upgraded version and play on words of the street food available in the black "townships", consisting of a 1/4 (Quarter) loaf of bread with potato "slap chips" as a base, to which items such as egg, polony etc are added. Kota Joe has an unique type of bread and have all the more well known urban foods, such as dagwoods, burgers, blondies, schwarmas etc, built up in a similar fashion to the "1/4", but the chips as a standard ingredient ... A clever fusion of the two.
A range of delicious deserts is almost as extensive as the main menu! Some of which being fun twists on the conventional, such as waffles on a stick. Very decadent! Yummy! If you leave hungry, you've done something wrong!
Don't consider driving out without one of their top class milkshakes. The normal range of milkshakes are available, but topped with some very different and creative "upgraded" shakes.
Overall, very good value for money. There isn't anywhere close by that...
Read morePlease do yourselves a favour and do not waste your time or money at this establishment. On arrival, we approached one of the roadhouse waitresses to inquire about where to park as we would like to be seated indoors. We were instructed to park outside Romans, which has clear signs indicating that parking was for Romans patrons only. Anyway, we did as instructed and proceeded into the restaurant. There were no waiters to direct us to a table, so, we approached the 2 gentlemen standing at the cashier table and requested to be seated upstairs. The entire staircase stank like a toilet. In hindsight, we should've left at that point but felt that since we had promised our child one of their " Best in Johannesburg Milkshakes", we should persevere. Bad decision. The waiter seated us and disappeared completely after promising to be back in 3 minutes. Keep in mind, the place was nearly empty. We had to look for someone else to take our orders. We each ordered a Ferrero and Choc mousse Milkshake. The milkshakes were disgusting. The mousse tasted like powder, as though someone purchased a premix and used that. The milk was luke warm and the entire thing was just not palatable. My son took 2 sips and looked like he was about to throw up, I felt the same. We decided to pay and leave immediately before one of us actually got sick on the floor. We waited another 10 minutes for the waiter to come back, paid the bill and was told that he had no change... interesting, right? The owner of this franchise clearly has no interest in maintaining standards or perhaps this is the standard?? Either way it's a concern. The motto at Kota Joe's is 'Screw the Diet' however, it seems more apt that it should be 'Screw the quality, Screw the service and Screw the customer'. Don't waste your money here. And I sincerely hope someone re evaluates the Best Milkshake claim, this is...
Read moreWorst. Service. Ever. Me and my friend were excited to try this place after we had seen amazing reviews from other people. And when we got there, we had to wait about 15 minutes by the door, waiting to be seated as there was a sign saying we should wait to be seated. The ladies outside simply looked at us and paid us no mind. I understand that they were probably placed outside to serve there, however, there werent that many cars as they simoly standing there, one could've showed us where to sit gave us menus then assigned another waiter to us.
Thereafter, a waiter came to us and showed us where to sit, gave us menus and left. We then waited 20 minutes for our orders to be taken. From what I know, drinks and cutlery are supposed to come first, thereafter condiments and sauces. After waiting another 20 minutes that felt like almost an hour, our food came. It was cold on top of that. 10 to 15 minutes passed and our drinks came, a long while later, cutlery and sauces came. At that point, we decided we wanted takeaways and the bill. That also took its time, we asked about 3 waiters to bring us takeaway boxes before we received them.
Mind you, we were seated next to an Indian couple that came after us but they got their things on time, especially the drinks.
The place looked understaffed on a busy weekend considering people had just gotten paid. Only 3 waiters were working inside, downstairs and upstairs. I'd give this place 0 stars, but because the drinks were nice, it's a 1...
