Mahatma Gandhi statue is situated opposite to the old colonial buildings in Church St, Pietermaritzburg’s city centre. The bronze sculpture, depicts a bare chested Gandhi with his traditional dhoti holding a simple walking stick, while the other hand reaching out in peace. The plaque on the side of the statue commemorates the centenary of the 1893 event during which he was evicted from the train because he was a man of dark skin, in the whites only first class wagon, who politely refused to move to third class.
