Gibralfaro - A Castle in the Clouds!** Hey fellow travelers and history enthusiasts, I recently visited the Gibralfaro in Malaga and wow, it's a gem! 🏰✨ Perched high above Malaga, Gibralfaro isn't just a castle; it's a historical sentinel offering some of the most spectacular views you can imagine. As you make the trek up (which is a mini adventure in itself), the anticipation builds, and trust me, the payoff is huge! The castle's walls whisper tales of the past - from its origins in the 10th century as a lighthouse and military fortress to its days standing guard over Malaga. Every corner, turret, and rampart seems to have a story to tell. Walking around these ancient walls, you can't help but feel a deep connection to history. But let's talk views – because that’s where Gibralfaro truly shines. The panoramic vistas of Malaga and the Mediterranean are simply breathtaking. It's the perfect spot for those sunset pics or just to sit and soak in the beauty of the Costa del Sol. The preservation of the site is remarkable, offering a genuine feel of medieval times. It's not overly commercialized, which adds to its charm. You get to explore at your own pace, immerse in the history, and maybe even picnic at one of the many serene spots. And while it's a bit of a hike to get up there, every step is worth it. Just wear comfortable shoes and bring water – you'll thank me later! In summary, Gibralfaro is a must-visit for anyone in Malaga. Whether you're a history buff, a photography lover, or just in it for the views, this place won't disappoint. It's a serene, historical, and visually stunning experience. Totally worth the climb! Happy travels!

Gibralfaro is famous for its castle, the Castillo de Gibralfaro, which dates back to the 14th century. The castle was built by the Nasrid dynasty, the last Muslim rulers of Spain, as part of a defensive system to protect the city of Malaga from invasion. It is located on a hill that overlooks the city and the Mediterranean Sea, providing strategic views of the surrounding area. The castle was named after the hill on which it stands, Gibralfaro, which is thought to be derived from the Arabic words "Jabal-Faruk," meaning "Hill of the Lighthouse." The castle served as a military stronghold for several centuries, and was occupied by Spanish troops until the 20th century. Today, the Castillo de Gibralfaro is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the castle and its surroundings. The castle is particularly well-known for its views of Malaga and the Mediterranean, and is a popular spot for watching the sunset. In addition to its historical significance, Gibralfaro is also known for its natural beauty, with lush vegetation and a variety of wildlife inhabiting the hill. It is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, who can enjoy the scenic trails and panoramic views from the top of the hill.

The place itself is great. We had a nice time up there with my wife and our 3 yr old daughter. Than why the 2 stars? Well, we have arrived a bit late and we were aware that the place closes at 18.00 o'clock. However, playing with the kid we forgot about the time and arrived at the exit point at 18.07. My mistake, it's true. However, there was no closing time annouced on loudspeaker nor any guards looking for people still inside. The gate was closed with a lock, nobody around. Only one lady in some guard uniform climbing the stairs. She saw us, but continued climbing. Well, we thought it's not her job to let us out, so we waited. After some minutes the same lady appears on the top of the wall, yelling at us in spanish. We told her we only speak english, so she gathered all her english knowledge (not much), to let us know how stupid we are, calling me irresponsible and some other kind things, all this yelling from the top of the castle wall. She continued the show for about five minutes before climbing down and letting us finally out on the gates. She must have felt really important during that 5 minutes she was trying to humiliate us in front of the kid, so I think she really deserves a medal or some bonus from the managment. Hope they will read this. 😃

This place is phenomenal. It's outstanding architecture and fantastic location make this place magical. There are several ways to go up there, but the best way to experience its magnificent beauty is on foot. Along the way up, you can discover new perspectives of different angles of the city. The gardens are well taken care of and there are many different types of trees and vegetation. Be careful on the way back though, the floor gets slippery so I recommend proper shoes. Before you leave the main entrance, there is a path that takes you to a little hill top where you can can find a small bar and have a cold beer and a last look of the city.

It is really nice place and worth to visit. If you want to walk upstairs there is a long way up. Good thing is there is a bus as well that can take you to the city center. We walked all the way up and down we took the bus, but other way aound would be better. All the climbing is worth the views which are stunning. You can see Malaga from all sides. Also there is history connected to this place which can you can listen through audio guide. Take your time and enjoy. There is a small bar where you can buy snacks or drinks.

Linked to the Alcazaba and included in the price. Fabulous views of the city and coast but a very steep and quite long climb to the top. Avoid doing this during the heat of the day. While views are fantastic and the castle's location is impressive, there is not that much to see up there apart from the views and the ramparts. Well worth a visit but only if you're relatively fit and don't mind getting hot and sweaty. If choosing just one of the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, choose the former.
