First: the practical details. Check the convent's web site for the (fixed) tour times. Then, turn up and wait; at the appointed hour, somebody will unlock the door. In our case it was a wonderfully friendly Spanish-speaking woman; who didn't speak English, but we communicated just fine. She showed us around the first room (with the wall frescoes), and one corridor of the cloisters, then left us alone for a few minutes. After that she took us upstairs to see into the church, and the walkways on top of the baroque ceilings (to see the original roof beams). Same treatment. All of these were amazing, and well worth the admission. In addition, there's an ethnographic museum with a few rooms kitted out as a cobbler, baker, etc., a toy collection, a great many nativity-scene characters (models), and a few additional paintings...

An unexpected treasure in Salamanca that the tourists don't know about. There are several convents you can tour and they're all worth the small price of admission. I found this one particularly interesting because the ceiling in the church is not the original ceiling. You actually get to climb above the newer ceiling and go into the attic where the original wood roof interior is located. It is quite amazing and you are looking 500 years in the past. The other thing that was really cool is there's a deck with a excellent view of Salamanca including the magnificent Salamanca cathedral. The audio tour is completed and about 1 hour and is...

Surprisingly this was a highlight for me and I enjoyed it more than some of the better known places. Firstly, the woman who greeted us was so friendly and helpful and spoke slowly and clearly so that we could follow her Spanish. She told us to look out for a painting of a "chova" included in the painted roof beams. This is the english chough, a little like a crow but with a red beak and doesn't exist in Spain. It is a symbol for Canterbury and represents a link with Thomas Becket. Not enough space to tell the legend here, but I loved it. Amazing medieval paintings uncovered... I could go on...

Only for lovers of churches and medieval paintings. Beautiful, well-preserved paintings on the church walls, from 1380 and later. On the upper floor there is a beautifully painted Gothic wooden ceiling, above the baroque stucco ceiling that was added later, and at the entrance there is a beautiful wooden ceiling in the Mudejar style. The somewhat expensive price of €8 was reduced to a reasonable €5. But given the other outstanding buildings and art in Salamanca, the museum is not a must-see.
