En el siglo XVI ya se daba en este lugar una señal luminosa para indicar a los navegantesla costa y evitar posibles naufragios.

En el año 1748 y a partir de la inauguración de un torreón diseñado como faro, se le da el nombre de la "Farola". Se encendía entre los meses de septiembre a mayo, el alcance era de 50 kilómetros y su luz era fija. Este faro fue abandonado debido a los daños sufridos por las Guerras Carlistas (la histórica "Farola" es hoy un mirador de la ciudad).

El actual faro se construyó entre 1854 y 1855en las laderas del monte Igueldo y se encuentra a una altitud de 134 msnm. Su primera luz fue producida con aceite y parafina. En 1916 se introdujeron cambios para que funcionara con petróleo. En 1918 se electrifica, en 1912 el pueblo de Igueldo encarga al arquitecto Luis Elizalde refacciones, incorporándose una planta con amplias ventanas y una terraza (desde ella se puede observar la ciudad de San Sebastián y el paisaje), y en 1929 se renueva su destellador,...

AVISO: DESDE ENERO DE 2021 NO SE PUEDE ACCEDER AL FARO POR EL PASEO DEL FARO. A PARTIR DEL Nº 73 (VILLA ZURGENA), HAY UNA VALLA QUE IMPIDE EL PASO AL FARO. SE CERRÓ PORQUE HUBO UN DESPRENDIMIENTO IMPORTANTE Y PARTE DE LA CARRETERA SE ENCUENTRA EN MAL ESTADO.

AVIS : DEPUIS JANVIER 2021, LE PHARE NE PEUT PAS ÊTRE ACCÉDÉ PAR LE "PASEO DEL FARO". À PARTIR DU N° 73 (VILLA ZURGENA), IL Y A UNE CLÔTURE QUI EMPÊCHE LE PASSAGE AU PHARE. ELLE A ÉTÉ FERMÉE PARCE QU'IL Y A EU UN ATTERRISSAGE MAJEUR ET UNE PARTIE DE LA ROUTE EST EN MAUVAIS ÉTAT.

Absolutely beautiful tower especially with the sunset. It usually quite crowded so a void peak hours. there are excellent places where to sit and stare at the horizon so take plenty of time to enjoy this...
