Madonna del Sasso — Attraction in Circolo di Locarno

The Sacred Mount Madonna del Sasso in Orselina is one of the most important religious and historical sites in the canton of Ticino. Tradition says that Fra ' Bartolomeo , a Franciscan friar of the convent of Locarno, wanted to build a place of worship on the "Rock " of Locarno as a result of an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Today it consists of the Church of the Annunciation at the foot of the Mount, the Via Crucis and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso , the Sacred Mountain is a wealth of art, history and spirituality.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso in Orselina is one of the most important historical and religious sites in the Canton of Ticino, resting on a scenic rock spur, built following the apparition of the Madonna in 1480. It can be reached on foot from the center of Locarno and walking the Via Crucis, through a path immersed in a fascinating natural setting, you reach the church, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Locarno area, the lake and the surrounding mountains.

We were visiting Locarno with friends and came here on a sunny summer day. Thankfully there weren’t many others so we were able to enjoy walking around. This church is amazing for its location and design. The interior has been well preserved, maybe restored. There are some 3D depictions of biblical events that are curious. The museum was closed so I can’t comment on that. Beware that there are many steps down (and up!) from the funicular stop. I definitely recommend spending time...
