The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso in Orselina is one of the most important historical and religious sites in the Canton of Ticino, resting on a scenic rock spur, built following the apparition of the Madonna in 1480. It can be reached on foot from the center of Locarno and walking the Via Crucis, through a path immersed in a fascinating natural setting, you reach the church, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Locarno area, the lake and the surrounding mountains. Interesting and very well preserved place above the roofs of Locarno with a spactacular view over the city and the lake. Pleasant to discover all its little stairways and hallways. Make sure to check out the church itself with its beautifully painted ceiling. Also have a look at the upper stairs up to the main street above, if you want to score some great pics with the lake and the mountains in the background, or even the building itself as a nice background for a cool portrait of you bird.

Madonna del Sasso ISO Superb church and monastery of Locarno. You can reach the place by car or train. There's a small walk but not too heavy for a average person. The church is beautiful and special to pilgrims. This is one of the more important places for catholic. This is a good place to go and gain energy. The church looks big but is actually small. This does not diminish the experience because it is a wonderful place. We didn't visit the monestery. I will probably come back sometime.

Stunning views of Locarno and Lago Maggiore from up here! Can be reached from Locarno by walk in about 30 minutes or you can take the funicular from Locarno to Orselina. There is a cafe and restaurant also up here where you can enjoy the views and relax. From Orselina you can also then take another funicular to Cardada-Cimetta. In a few minutes the cable car will take you to Cardada and a panoramic chairlift makes the final ascent to Cimetta.

It was a lovely experience to visit the church and museum. You take the venichular up and back and that was easy. The museum is free to enter and includes nice artworks and interesting items from the past that have been used in church life. You are able to attend mass here too. The church was full of art. This is a really nice activity to understand the history of this very special place.

Funicular was not running, so I walked up. If you are not fit enough, make sure to take bus (or funicular if it’s possible). It is a very beautiful place. The scenery is astonishing- church, city, mountains and lake - all together. But please do not forget that many people are also visiting there with religious reasons, not just as a tourist. It is worth to visit in any cases.
