🚢Qijin Island 🏝️A Mini Adventure From Ferry Pier to Black Sand Beach
Qijin (旗津) might look small on the map, but once you hop off the ferry at Qijin Ferry Pier, it’s like stepping into a charming little island world. From the old street (旗津老街), you can easily stroll straight to the famous black sand beach in just a few minutes—but the real fun is to take it slow and soak in the local vibes.
Along the way, the streets are filled with tempting snacks and local treats. Don’t miss the famous green tomato platter (綠蕃茄切盤)—a surprisingly refreshing salty-sour snack that’s a Qijin classic. And if the weather’s hot (which it often is), grab a bowl of fruit shaved ice (水果刨冰) loaded with seasonal fresh fruit.
For seafood lovers, Qijin is heaven. There are many seafood stalls and small restaurants offering fresh grilled squid, oyster omelets, fried seafood platters, and clams stir-fried with basil—all at very local, wallet-friendly prices.
Once you reach the black sand beach, you can feel the peaceful charm of this little island escape. It’s the perfect quick getaway from the city buzz, but still packed with color, flavor, and personality.

You need to take ferries to reach the place and the ferries stop service at around 9pm. We almost missed it. The waiting line was long and we were not sure whether we could make it. And motorcycles are fighting with pedestrians at exit, that is quite dangerous and noisy.
Seafood here is nice, but also quite messy way of doing business. We managed to get what we wanted and they were good. The prices here are transparent as long as you choose the busy ones, you most likely won’t get cheated.
It is like a small night market here with ocean breeze. I don’t think I am coming back here again. I would choose night markers near by in Kaohsiung instead. The transportation takes too much time waiting and going there.
The street is white short and if you choose not to eat, it probably only takes 30 minutes to...
