🚢Qijin Island 🏝️A Mini Adventure From Ferry Pier to Black Sand Beach

Qijin (旗津) might look small on the map, but once you hop off the ferry at Qijin Ferry Pier, it’s like stepping into a charming little island world. From the old street (旗津老街), you can easily stroll straight to the famous black sand beach in just a few minutes—but the real fun is to take it slow and soak in the local vibes.

Along the way, the streets are filled with tempting snacks and local treats. Don’t miss the famous green tomato platter (綠蕃茄切盤)—a surprisingly refreshing salty-sour snack that’s a Qijin classic. And if the weather’s hot (which it often is), grab a bowl of fruit shaved ice (水果刨冰) loaded with seasonal fresh fruit.

For seafood lovers, Qijin is heaven. There are many seafood stalls and small restaurants offering fresh grilled squid, oyster omelets, fried seafood platters, and clams stir-fried with basil—all at very local, wallet-friendly prices.

Once you reach the black sand beach, you can feel the peaceful charm of this little island escape. It’s the perfect quick getaway from the city buzz, but still packed with color, flavor, and personality.

⸻

🚢 How to get there: • By Ferry: From Gushan Ferry Pier (鼓山輪渡站), take the ferry to Qijin Ferry Pier. The ride takes just about 5 minutes, and you can bring your bike or scooter on board. • By MRT + Ferry: Take the Orange Line to Sizihwan Station (O1), then walk about 5-8 minutes to Gushan Ferry Pier. • By Light Rail: Get off at Hamasen Light Rail Station, then walk to the...

Cijin Island – A Must-Visit in Kaohsiung

If you’re in Kaohsiung, don’t miss out on Cijin Island — a perfect half-day getaway filled with coastal charm and local eats.

Getting There: • Take the ferry from Gushan Ferry Terminal. • Ferry fare: Only NT$30 per trip and you can pay with your EasyCard.

What to Do: • Rent a bike or electric scooter right after arriving. Most shops provide a map so you can easily explore all the main spots. If going to Old street then don’t need to rent. If you are going to lighthouse, better to rent as it’s long walk. • Cijin Old Street: A foodie’s paradise! The street is lined with vendors selling fresh seafood, grilled squid, ice cream, bubble tea, and lots of Taiwanese snacks. • Cijin Lighthouse & Fort: Park your bike and walk up the hill for stunning views of the coastline and Kaohsiung Harbor — arguably the highlight of the trip. • Cijin Beach & Coastal Park: A scenic ride along the beachfront path with sea breeze, photo spots, and art installations.

Tips: • Total time needed: Around 3–4 hours. • Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. • Great for families, couples, or...

A tourists spot that looks messy yet has its own order.

You need to take ferries to reach the place and the ferries stop service at around 9pm. We almost missed it. The waiting line was long and we were not sure whether we could make it. And motorcycles are fighting with pedestrians at exit, that is quite dangerous and noisy.

Seafood here is nice, but also quite messy way of doing business. We managed to get what we wanted and they were good. The prices here are transparent as long as you choose the busy ones, you most likely won’t get cheated.

It is like a small night market here with ocean breeze. I don’t think I am coming back here again. I would choose night markers near by in Kaohsiung instead. The transportation takes too much time waiting and going there.

The street is white short and if you choose not to eat, it probably only takes 30 minutes to...
