Last year, when we were in Thailand, people kept telling us how much they enjoyed going to a Muay Thai event, so while planning our trip this year, I looked into going while in Phuket. I saw that you could buy ticket through all of the tour sites like Viator, Look etc. Then I went to the website for the arena and saw that you could book directly through them which included transport that the other sites did not. I contacted them through whatsApp and they responded almost immediately. I just gave them my name, date, name of hotel and they made a reservation without even requiring payment. They gave me front row ringside seats. They picked us up in a van and the driver collected our payment on arrival and escorted us directly to the entrance, no wait. Wow, we were right in the action. I'd never really considered going to this kind of event but I was really surprised by how exciting it was. They started with two young boys (maybe 12 or so) which really surprised me. They were amazing for their age!! It got pretty intense at times when the action was right in front of us. All of the matches went the full time until the last match when there was a crazy KO in the second round!! The beer was reasonably priced and there was also popcorn. The bathrooms were clean. Afterwards the same driver returned us to our hotel. It was a great night. So glad we did it and I feel we got special treatment by booking directly through the...
Read moreSome very, very obvious fake fights that are intentionally lost by one fighter (the Thai, never the foreigner). My suspicion is because of the gambling involved, as I saw a couple of Thai guys clearly placing wagers with foreigners in the crowd.
I've seen many real fights in my time to know when someone is doing really bad acting. For e.g. one Thai fighter tonight took a 4 punch combination to the side of the head while his gloves were up and deflecting every punch, then pretending to be hurt by recoiling his head backwards in an unnatural direction then dropping to the ground. He goes limp for a second then realises his performance was inadequate so he gets back up and repeats his acting to another 4 punch combo.
The women's fight was furious and legitimate with spinning elbows cracking the head was quite brutal. So not all fights were fixed, but at least half were.
Most foreign fighters were given opponents who would intentionally throw and it was done with such poor acting that it was shocking to me that not many people noticed in the crowd. Perhaps that's how they away with this.
Then that's where I realised.. 99% of the crowd were foreigners. No locals, which is a very bad sign!
Stay away from this stadium. Also stay away from Bangla boxing which is exactly the same...
Read moreAwesome night at the fights...7 in all and went for VIP seating, but really ringside would be just as good...really close to the action...in fact maybe a little to close...especially when the inevitable cuts open up from elbow strikes, & if this happens & the fight moves into the corner closest to you ...well I will leave it up to your imagination where blood will end up...the 3 female 4 male card didn't disappoint...the very shortened Rah Mauy....the warm up routine each fighter does was a for us westerners, who know Thai boxing, a little disappointing..a taxi will pick you up from your hotel for free & drop you back after but beware of these guys... they are the most dodgy people I have encountered so far....on the way there all is good, but on the way back is when you need to stand your ground (for the free ride back to the hotel...or Bangla Road) because they will fleece you if you let them. Overall a great night although one of the most expensive....starts around 9.00pm but Thai's do not rush...late finish if most fights go the distance..even the girls do 5 rounds...things have changed...once upon a time girls were not allowed to fight in the same ring, now what happens is boys over the top rope (as per normal)...girls under the...
