An excellent show ruined by the audience.
This show is free for those who purchase a Royal Palace ticket or 400BHT separately/for those who lose their ticket. It lasts about 30mins and is certainly worth going to. For my money it was better than the palace. However, the audience ruined it. Please ban phones in this production.
You don't need to register in advance, you can just turn up. However you SHOULD register in advance, because you might be turned away if its full, especially in high season.
There are many buses to this area and there is a free shuttle bus from the Royal Palace.
The show tells a subplot of the Ramakien - a Thai epic story based on an Indian classic. It's a traditional story and part of Thai heritage. It's told in Thai, with English subtitles. Music is provided by a small 10 piece orchestra (or thereabouts - I didn't count). The story is fun and easy to follow. The production quality is actually very good, costumes and scenery are excellent given that its a 'free' show. Acting is also very entertaining (although not western naturalistic acting, obviously) and they have a surprisingly large cast. Afterwards you can take pictures with the cast.
Unfortunately the public are allowed access to watch this show. They scrum, push and cut in line to get in, they talk during the show, take poor quality photos that already exist online, use the flash in the middle of important scenes, check their messages and email during the show, let their phone ring, film random segments that they will never watch again, leave the auditorium before the cast have taken their bow and show a high degree of creativity and imagination when it comes to being disrespectful to the actors and others who are interested in the plot.
Management: please ban phones from use during the show. Public: Try in the name of all that is holy to show some manners. Put down your god-damned phone and live in the moment. Watch it with your eyes, not via a screen. If you want a...
Read moreThis show is part of the admission ticket to the Grand Palace. After completing the Grand Palace tour, I was on the way walking out of the Palace. To the left just before the exit, there is a tentage with a big tv screen, showcasing the show.
I was approached by the staff if I would like to watch the show. Therefore, I asked how much is it and was told that it is inclusive in the Grand Palace ticket. As I was time permitting, I boarded the special bus to await for the departure to the theatre. (Note that the theatre is some distance away).
At the arrival of time, the bus departed with almost full capacity. Bus ride was about 8-10mins. The bus stopped along the road and we alighted and crossed the road to the admission of the theatre.
Upon entering the theatre, you can see a tourist souvenir counter on the left hand side. Soon we were ushered in to watch the show. It’s free seating inside and majority of the rows were occupied, except for the front row. My experience is to sit as near to the stage as possible for the best experience.
Entire show was about 40mins, fully air-conditioned,giving you a super comfortable feeling outside of the basking sun of Bangkok.
If you have already purchase the Grand Palace ticket, you should go for this special and extravagant Khon...
