This show is part of the admission ticket to the Grand Palace. After completing the Grand Palace tour, I was on the way walking out of the Palace. To the left just before the exit, there is a tentage with a big tv screen, showcasing the show. I was approached by the staff if I would like to watch the show. Therefore, I asked how much is it and was told that it is inclusive in the Grand Palace ticket. As I was time permitting, I boarded the special bus to await for the departure to the theatre. (Note that the theatre is some distance away). At the arrival of time, the bus departed with almost full capacity. Bus ride was about 8-10mins. The bus stopped along the road and we alighted and crossed the road to the admission of the theatre. Upon entering the theatre, you can see a tourist souvenir counter on the left hand side. Soon we were ushered in to watch the show. It’s free seating inside and majority of the rows were occupied, except for the front row. My experience is to sit as near to the stage as possible for the best experience. Entire show was about 40mins, fully air-conditioned,giving you a super comfortable feeling outside of the basking sun of Bangkok. If you have already purchase the Grand Palace ticket, you should go for this special and extravagant Khon Performance. 👍🏻

Quaint theatre and superb Khon performance from the cast! My ticket was inclusive from the 500baht Grand Palace. Having been in Thailand for several days now, I was not especially excited by temples so I was little disappointed that I paid 500baht for the Grand Palace. But the Khon Play made my 500baht worth it! Upon exiting the Grand Palace, there was a free shuttle to the theatre and the ride itself was already enjoyable. A little bit sad that only a handful of people went to see the Khon. I'd rather see performances like this than go to another temple in Bangkok (already visited Chiang Mai which has a lot of good temples left and right). Khon has English and Chinese subtitles by the way so no worries for non Thai audience. Keep in mind though that it is a small theatre and seats are so near the stage. Had to shush a late couple who couldnt decide where to sit and were talking loudly. Its a theatre. So please keep quiet and arrive early as they start on time.

Watching a live theatre performance here of Khon or traditional mask play of Thailand, was a lifetime experience and like an icing on the cake of our tour of Grand Palace and the Temple of Emerald Budha. This is a combo package for which you are issued a single ticket and a free bus service, to and fro, is provided from Grand Palace to this place. The act performed here is based on Ramakien or the Thai version of the Hindu epic Ramayan and it depicts a fight between Rama and Ravana (Thotsaken), which is shown in a novel way, with a stellar performance by the actor performing the role of Hanuman. Equally accomplished is the rendering of live music by the musicians and the role of the Compere. The act though is only of a duration of about 25 minutes , is not only mesmerising but it leaves a pleasant and lasting impact on your mind.

We went to see the KHON- the assemblage of Thai dances- at the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre. The ticket for the Khon was included in our ticket for the tour of the Grand Palace. The theatre is a plush, air conditioned theatre. I have a photo of the stage with the majestic curtain down. We were not allowed to photograph the Khon performance. The performance was beautiful aided by a ticker - tape description in English above the stage, telling us about the dance happening on the stage. I was struck by the use of the word "shatru" for " enemy" common to my country, India's languages, Sanskrit, Hindi and possibly others. It was an hour-long recital wherein the dancers wove their magic on stage in their breathtakingly beautiful costumes and with their graceful movements. Dances from all over Thailand were depicted.

The Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre is a unique cultural gem worth visiting if you have time during your trip to the Grand Palace. Tickets to the Grand Palace often include a performance of the Ramakien at this theater, which is located about 1 km from the palace, with convenient rides available for visitors. The show itself offers a glimpse into traditional Thai performing arts, combining classical dance and music to depict stories from the Ramakien—Thailand’s version of the Indian epic Ramayana. While the production might not be lavish compared to modern performances, it provides a decent and authentic experience, especially for those interested in Thai culture. If you enjoy traditional art forms or want a break from sightseeing, it’s worth spending an hour here to appreciate Thailand’s rich heritage.
